CHICAGO - The Chicago Red Stars head into the National Women's Soccer League break on a two-game win streak after shutting out the Houston Dash 0-1 behind a goal from rookie, Penelope Hocking in the 68th minute.
KEY MOMENTS:
14' Houston sends a corner kick into Chicago's 18-yard box that finds the head of one of their players who then sends the ball past Chicago's goalkeeper, but a quick reaction from Julia Bianchi keeps the ball out of the net
19' On a throw-in, Chicago's Bianca St-Georges gets the ball to Ella Stevens who has the space to turn and carry the ball up field before finally threading a ball through the Houston defense and to forward, Sarah Griffith, whose shot gets deflected by Houston's keeper
47' Houston's Ebony Salmon sends a dangerous cross into Chicago's penalty area, but goalkeeper, Emily Boyd makes a diving save to stop the attack
57' Great hustle from Chicago's Ava Cook keeps a ball in play and finds Ella Stevens whose nifty footwork gets her around a defender and gets the ball to a crossing Sarah Griffith, but Griffith is unable to convert
67' The Red Stars win a corner kick attempt, which is taken by Julia Bianchi, whose ball into the box finds Kayla Sharples, but her header attempt goes just over the cross bar
68' Chicago attacks quickly following two substitutions and a shot by Cari Roccaro ricochets off of St-Georges, lands at the feet of Penelope Hocking who puts it away for the goal, 0-1 Chicago
GAME NOTES:
23 seconds after subbing into the match in the 68th minute, Penelope Hocking scored the match's lone goal making it the fastest goal in league history by a substitute player. Tonight marked the first match for the forward since May 21
In her second-straight start, Emily Boyd earned her second-straight shutout for the Red Stars
Tonight marked Taylor Malham's first regular-season start this season. The defender played 82 minutes and ranked in the top five Red Stars players in tackles (1) and completed passes (21)
