Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Derek Wilkinson, Head Coach and General Manager of the Charlotte Checkers, announced today that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Kenton Smith. Smith is the fist player to agree to terms with the Checkers for the 2006-07 season.
Smith returns for his fourth season with the Checkers and his seventh in the ECHL. A 5-foot-11-inch, 177-pound defenseman, he played in all 72 of the Checkers regular season games last season and was named the team's captain.
"Kenton has anchored our defense for the last couple of years and we're thrilled to have him back," said Wilkinson. "He's been a big part of our success the past two years and he's a great leader on and off the ice."
Smith notched 37 points last season (10g, 27a) and was recently selected as a nominee for the 2006 InterContinental Hotels Group Ironman Award. The ICHG Ironman Award is presented annually to a Professional Hockey Players' Association (PHPA) Member playing in the American Hockey League and a Member playing in the ECHL, respectively, who has participated in each of his Club's regular season games and has contributed both offensively and defensively throughout the 2005-2006 regular season.
The Charlotte Checkers return for their second season at Charlotte Bobcats Arena this fall. Season ticket packages are on sale now included a new Small Business Ticket Package.
