Charlotte Sting News Release

Charlotte Sting guard Andrea Stinson was named the recipient of the Community Assist Award for the month of September, it was announced recently by the WNBA. Already twice honored for her community work throughout the offseason, Stinson wins the in-season award for the first time in her eight-year career. The WNBA will make a $5,000 donation to a charity of Stinson's choice, The Dawn Staley Foundation. Stinson and Staley have been teammates since 1999, forming the starting backcourt for the Sting and never missing a game during that span.

"This is great! I really enjoy working in the community, especially with the kids. It's such a nice honor," said Stinson. "The only person that is going to be happier about this is Dawn."

It marks the second time that a Sting player has been honored with the award during the 2004 season. Stinson's rookie teammate, Nicole Powell, earned the award for the month of July.

During September, Stinson participated in a Reading Time Out at Albemarle Elementary School, joined the entire team to sign autographs following the final home game of 2004, participated in middle school career day and visited children at Presbyterian Hospital with Nicole Powell and Kelly Mazzante, where she spent time with the patients and their families, posed for photos, signed autographs and distributed souvenirs.

A native of Cornelius, NC, Stinson continually gives back to the Greater Charlotte Community. In addition to visiting schools and youth groups, Stinson has conducted numerous reading timeouts around town. She hosts her own youth basketball camp in the spring and is involved in countless other clinics and tournaments throughout the year. Stinson excels at connecting with the fans and the public and always is the first to volunteer for a community event. She stops by the Sting front office on a weekly basis requesting more autograph cards, t-shirts and giveaways to hand out in the community when she is out and about.

The WNBA Community Assist Award is given out monthly by the league to recognize players for their charitable efforts. Each month all 13 WNBA teams are able to nominate a player for the award, which honors the player who best reflects the league's passion for making a difference in their communities. Through programs such as WNBA Breast Health Awareness, WNBA Mind. Body. Spirit, and WNBA Read to Achieve, the WNBA has helped to create more comprehensive awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer, good nutrition, regular exercise, and a positive self-image, and has worked to bring the joy of reading to millions of children across the country.

The Dawn Staley Foundation was founded by Dawn Staley in the fall of 1996 and seeks to create a future of hope for at-risk youth by providing opportunities which help them realize their dreams and become productive and responsible citizens. The creation and support of educational and sports programs which challenge minds, build character and help youth to develop to their fullest potential academically, socially and physically is the essence of the Foundation.
