Charlotte Lady Eagles vs. Atlanta Silverbacks Women - 5:30 pm kickoff
The Charlotte Lady Eagles, having just one week of practice, take to the field Friday night for their first game of the 2007 season. Charlotte's 2007 team includes thirteen players from the 2006 squad, seven players new to Charlotte, and three players from earlier seasons who are now back with the team. Click here for a look at the full 2007 Charlotte Lady Eagles Roster.
The Lady Eagles' biggest strength this season will be the attack, with several very strong forwards battling for playing time. Among the veterans are 7th year players Christy Rife and Tina Murphy, and 6th year veteran Ashley Swinehart, who all not only offer an attacking prowess, but also bring a strong leadership presence to the team. Ashley played some games in the outside back position last year, and will likely play there again some this season. She'll look to help the attack, pushing up the wing. Look for Tina Murphy to play mostly in the midfield this season. Last season's scoring leaders for Charlotte return as well. Darcel Mollon, the Trinidad national team member, scored eight goals last season for the Lady Eagles and Heidi Drummond, graduate of Penn State, scored seven. Adding to an already strong front line for Charlotte this season will be former U.S. National Team player, Kelly Schmedes. Schmedes played with the Lady Eagles in the 2005 season and scored 11 goals in just 8 games she was able to play for Charlotte. Kelly spent the 2006 season playing in Sweden. Also back to the team is Carrie Kveton who played for the Ottawa Fury last season and helped Ottawa defeat the Lady Eagles in the semi-finals to advance to the W-League National Final. Two other notable forward additions are Nikki Lyons and Abby Crumpton who will likely play in the midfield a bit this season. Nikki played her college career at Nebraska and has experience with the U.S. U-21 National Team. Abby Crumpton played professionally with the WUSA Atlanta beat before the league folded, and played in the W-League most recently with the Asheville Splash.
The Atlanta Silverbacks are always a tough contender in the league. Last season the Lady Eagles lost to Atlanta both times they faced one another. Former Lady Eagles forward Sarah Steinmann scored all five goals for Atlanta in the 3-0 and 2-1 victories over Charlotte. Steinmann is back with the Silverbacks this season, and will be a handful for the Charlotte defense to contain.
Charlotte Eagles vs. Wilmington Hammerheads - 8:00 pm kickoff
The Charlotte Eagles pro team hosts the Wilmington Hammerheads Friday night in the Eagles fourth match of the 2007 season. The Eagles have two wins and one loss this season, losing their road game 4-3 in stoppage time to Harrisburg last weekend. Despite the loss, the Eagles have had a great start to the season, and veteran forward Jacob Coggins leads the league in total points with nine, and goals scored with four.
The Wilmington Hammerheads have had a rough start to the season, opening with a 1-1 tie to Harrisburg and losing 2-1 in two very close matches with Western Mass and Richmond. Charlotte / Wilmington matches are also hard fought, physical battles, and Friday night will be no exception. Charlotte tied Wilmington in all four regular season matches together in 2006; 1-1, 3-3, 2-2, and 1-1.
