Charlotte Eagles News Release
Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery dropped a 2-1 decision to the Charlotte Eagles tonight at Blackbaud Stadium in front of a crowd of 2,012. Charleston scored first but Charlotte replied with a second-half brace to earn the win.
The Battery dominated the first period and came close to breaking the deadlock in the 16th minute. Midfielder Kevin Jackson whipped in a corner from the left side. The ball dipped towards the back post but defender Jason Kutney's header missed wide right.
One minute later forward Greg Simmonds layed a perfect through-ball between the center-half and the right-back. Midfielder Andres Perez ran onto the pass, he fired a left-footed shot at the goal but it zipped past the right post.
Charleston scored in the 16th minute. The Battery worked a short corner to Perez wide on the right. He swung a cross into the middle that Simmonds met at the penalty spot with a powerful header. The ball flew into the goal as the Charlotte goalkeeper Chris McClellan dove to his right.
Charlotte tied the game in the 56th minute. Forward Jacob Coggins swept the ball across from the right-flank. Midfielder Ishmael Venta met the cross and lifted the ball neatly over Battery goalkeeper Chris Doyle and into the goal.
The Eagles scored again in the 59th minute. The Battery defense failed to clear properly and Coggins was first to the loose ball just outside the 6-yard box. He took a quick touch then fired past Doyle into the bottom left-hand corner.
Next up for the Charleston Battery is a Wednesday night match-up with Wake Forest University; kick off is set for 6:00 PM.
