Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE -- The Charlotte Stone Crabs suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the Jupiter Hammerheads on Sunday at Charlotte Sports Park.
Charlotte mounted a late rally but fell short in Game 1, 5-4. In the night-cap the Hammerheads chased Eliazer Suero from the game early with a five-run second inning, as Jupiter completed the sweep by taking down Charlotte, 6-1.
Rehabbing Rays designated hitter Luke Scott served in that capacity for the entirety of the doubleheader. He was 2-for-6 with a walk and a run scored combined between both games.
The Hammerheads emerged with the victory in the opening contest behind a four-RBI performance from Marcell Ozuna.
Albert Suarez started for the Stone Crabs and allowed a run on four hits, but lasted just four innings while battling a high pitch-count.
Charlotte tied things up in the fourth inning, when Todd Glaesmann led off with a line-drive double to the right-center field gap. Steve Tinoco followed with a single, and Cody Rogers delivered a sacrifice fly on a line to right that brought home Glasemann with the tying run.
The Stone Crabs managed just two runs against Jupiter starter Chad James (6-8) in his 5-1/3 innings of work.
Alex Koronis (2-1) entered in relief of Suarez to open the fifth and ran into trouble from the start.
A lead-off walk and a single put the first two men aboard, and one out later Ozuna belted a three-run shot over the scoreboard in left center to give the Hammerheads a 4-1 lead.
Ozuna added a run-scoring single in the seventh, and that final run proved to be the difference in the game.
Steve Tinoco delivered a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh that pulled Charlotte to within a run, but Scott McGough got Cody Rogers to fly out to right to end the game.
Tinoco finished the first game a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, as eight of the nine Charlotte hits came from the first four batters in the order.
In the nightcap, the Hammerheads got to Charlotte starter Eliazer Suero (4-7) for five runs early as they sent 11 men to the plate in the second inning.
Suero was charged with five runs - four earned - in just 1-1/3 innings of work. He permitted just three hits, but walked two and hit a batter.
The Stone Crabs got a strong relief outing from George Jensen, who inherited a bases loaded, one-out situation in the second but escaped the jam without a run scoring. He worked 3-2/3 scoreless frames out of the Charlotte bullpen, allowing just a pair of hits.
The Stone Crabs pushed across their lone run off Jose Fernandez (5-1) in the third inning.
A two-out triple by Robby Price sparked the rally. After Scott walked, Glaesmann hit his second double of the day to drive home Price.
With two doubles on Sunday, 10 of Glaesmann's 18 hits in a Stone Crabs uniform have gone for extra bases.
With Sunday's pair of losses, the Stone Crabs are now just 1-15 on Sundays.
After a league-wide off day on Monday, the Stone Crabs will hit the road for a three-game set at Bradenton starting Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
