Charlotte Announces 2013 Opening Day Roster

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Tampa Bay Rays have announced the Opening Day Roster for the 2013 Charlotte Stone Crabs, which will be the club's fifth season in Charlotte County. The list features familiar faces and welcomes top prospects Felipe Rivero, Richie Shaffer, and Drew Vettleson.

Left-Handed Pitcher, Felipe Rivero is one of two lefties from the Rays system to go the 2012 Futures Game. Rivero finished third in the organization with an ERA of 3.41. Rivero was signed by the Rays as a non-drafted free agent in 2008 is now ranked number 18 in the Rays top prospects entering the 2013 season.

Outfielder Drew Vettleson joins the Stone Crabs from the Bowling Green Hot Rods where he set a franchise record last season with 139 hits. Ranking 10 among the Rays 2013 prospects, Vettleson is said to have excellent bat speed and base running skills.

Highlighting the Stone Crabs roster is third basemen Richie Shafer. Out of Clemson University, Shafer was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the first round (25th overall) and is ranked number nine among Rays prospects entering the 2013 season. Shaffer is considered one of the best college power bats in the draft class batting .336 in his final year at Clemson with 10 homers, 46 RBIs, 63 walks, a .573 slugging percentage and .480 on-base percentage.

Among those returning to Charlotte this season are pitchers Grayson Garvin (DL) and Nate Garcia. Headlining the position players are Luke Bailey, Hector Guevara, and Steven Tinocco.

The Stone Crabs open the campaign on Saturday, April 6th, at Charlotte Sports Park as they take on the Palm Beach Marauders.
