Charleston to face Charlotte in Second Round of US Open Cup on June 24

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery (USL1) will face the Charlotte Eagles (USL2) in the second round of the 2008 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The game will take place on Tuesday, June 24 at Blackbaud Stadium; gates open at 6:30 PM with kick off set for 7:30 PM ($5 - $10, 971-GOAL / www.charlestonbattery.com). Charleston advanced to the second round with a 3-0 win versus the ASC new Stars on Tuesday night; Darren Spicer scored all three goals, the first hat-trick recorded by a Battery player since the 2002 season.

Charlotte defeated the Clearwater Galactics (USASA) by a score of five goals to two on Tuesday evening to book their berth into the second round. The Eagles are currently in first position in the USL Second Division with a record of six wins, one loss, two ties, and 20 points.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the U.S. Soccer Federation's National Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest annual team tournament in U.S. sports history and among the oldest soccer tournaments of its type in the world having crowned a champion for 94 consecutive years dating back to 1914. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor long-time soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
