
Charleston Battery signs Dan Antoniuk and Scott Buete

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery has agreed to terms with forward Dan Antoniuk and midfielder Scott Buete for the 2009 USL First Division season pending USSF approval. Antoniuk joins the Battery after spending 2008 with the Carolina RailHawks. A native of Philadelphia, PA, Antoniuk has scored 30 goals in 136 games played. Buete comes to the Battery after playing the last three seasons with the Atlanta Silverbacks
Antoniuk, 6-3, 200 lbs., 28 yrs., arrives in Charleston after spending the 2008 season with the Carolina RailHawks where he led the team in games played appearing in all 30 USL1 matches.
Antoniuk began his pro career in 2003 with the Portland Timbers where he played three seasons before joining the Montreal Impact for the 2006 season. He played in 20 games for the Impact before switching to the Atlanta Silverbacks in an off-season trade. Antoniuk played 26 games for Atlanta in 2007 helping the Silverbacks to the Championship game where they lost to the Seattle Sounders.
A product of Wheaton College, Antoniuk was named the NEWMAC Player of the Year in 2000. During his time at Wheaton, he held the record for career goals (54) and points (144). Antoniuk also held the record for goals in one season with 18; an accomplishment he achieved twice during his four-year collegiate career.
Scott Buete began his pro career with Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire playing 21 games during the 2004 & 2005 seasons. In 2006 Buete transferred to the Atlanta Silverbacks where he played 77 games in three years and was a member of the 2007 side that advanced to the USL First Division Championship game.
A native of Bowie, MD, Buete was a four-year starter for the University of Maryland; Buete was Chicago's first round SuperDraft pick (ninth overall) in 2004. At Maryland Buete was a key figure in the Terrapins two NCAA Final Four appearances, 2002 ACC Tournament championship, and was named First Team All-American in 2003.
Battery hosts USL2 Wilmington Hammerheads Saturday at Blackbaud
The Charleston Battery plays the USL Second Division Wilmington Hammerheads Saturday afternoon (April 4) at Blackbaud Stadium in a final pre-season exhibition match. The game kicks off at 3 PM; there is no charge for admission.
This will be the Battery's last scrimmage before next Saturday's (April 11) season opener in Vancouver, BC versus the defending champion Vancouver Whitecaps (10 PM Sports Radio 1450 AM).
