Charleston Battery Adds Azira and Griffith

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery has agreed to terms with midfielder Michael Azira and defender Quinton Griffith for the upcoming USL PRO season. Azira returns to the Battery for a second season after scoring the winning goal in the 2012 USL PRO Championship match. Griffith is a current member of the Antigua and Barbuda national team and joins the Battery after playing the past two seasons for fellow USL PRO side Antigua Barracuda FC.

Midfielder Michael Azira returns to the Charleston Battery for a second year after an impressive first season. Azira played 18 games for the Battery in 2012 logging 1,567 minutes. Azira's lone goal for the year turned out to be a crucial one as he scored the game-winner in the Battery's 1-0 USL PRO championship win versus the Wilmington Hammerheads.

A native of Kampala, Uganda, Azira 5-10, 187lbs., 25 yrs., played collegiately at the University of Mobile. During that period Azira also played in the PDL for the Mississippi Brilla.

Quinton Griffith has played 23 games for the Antigua and Barbuda national team scoring four goals. He was part of the squad that took part in part in the final stages of the 2010 Caribbean Championship and also featured for Antigua and Barbuda in the 2012 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

In his two years with Antigua Barracuda FC in USL PRO, Griffith played 39 games scoring three goals.

A native of St Johns, Antigua, Griffith, 5-9, 170 lbs, 21yrs., featured for the Charleston Battery during the recent Carolina Challenge Cup pre-season tournament featuring Major League Soccer, playing in all three Charleston Battery games.

Battery to open USL PRO season in Richmond, VA

The Charleston Battery will open the defense of its USL PRO championship in Richmond, VA with a match versus long-time rival the Richmond Kickers on Saturday, April 13; kick off is set for 7:00 PM. The game will be broadcast live on Sports Radio 1450 AM.

The Charleston Battery home opener is set for Saturday, April 20 vs. Antigua Barracuda FC at Blackbaud Stadium. Gates open at 6 PM - kick off 7:30 PM ($10 - $18, 843-971-4625 / www.charlestonbattery.com).
