Philadelphia Charge News Release
VILLANOVA, PA (August 22, 2002) - The Women's United Soccer Association announced Wednesday that Philadelphia Charge forward Marinette Pichon has been named Offensive Player of the Year. Pichon is the first Charge player to receive the honor, which was voted on by WUSA coaches, general managers, players and select media representatives.
Pichon led the Charge with 14 goals and 29 points in just her first year in the league. The Frenchwoman, who also had an assist this season, set Charge single-season records in goals and points and became the franchise's all-time leading scorer.
"I am so happy to win this award," Pichon said. "I owe a lot on my success to my teammates. They really helped me. If they didn't get me the ball I wouldn't be able to score.
"However, its is tough right now with the season ending the way it did."
Pichon, who is also in the running for the league's Most Valuable Player award that will be announced Thursday, is currently in France preparing for her county's World Cup qualifier against Denmark this Friday. She had to make a number of trips across the Atlantic this season, as she played for both the Charge and her National Team.
The 26-year-old didn't record her first goal until the third game of the season. However, during one span she scored 11 of the Charge's 14 goals in seven games she appeared in, recording three two-goal games and one hat trick over that span.
"Pichon has had an outstanding season," Charge Head Coach Krikorian said. "She finished a number of chances for us and is a World-class player."
Krikorian was named the WUSA Coach of the Year on Tuesday.
