The Philadelphia Charge will be seeking their second straight postseason berth tonight when they take on the defending Founders Cup champion San Jose CyberRays at Spartan Stadium. The game can be seen live on CN8 starting at 10 p.m. (ET).
The Charge (10-2-5, 35 pts), who sit in first place in the WUSA, can qualify for the postseason with a win or a tie tonight against the fifth-place CyberRays (7-6-4, 25 pts), who are also fighting for a playoff spot. A loss by the Washington Freedom against the Carolina Courage tonight would also clinch a playoff spot for Philadelphia. The Freedom and Courage play at 7 p.m. (ET) tonight at SAS Stadium in Cary, NC.
In addition, the Charge can wrap up homefield advantage for the semifinal round with a win and an Atlanta loss. The Beat visit the San Diego Spirit tonight at 10 p.m. (ET).
San Jose and Philadelphia played to a scoreless draw at Villanova Stadium on June 1 in the only other meeting between the two teams this season. The CyberRays hold a 2-1-1 advantage all-time against the Charge. These two teams will meet for a final time during the regular season on Wednesday, August 7 at Villanova Stadium.
The Charge will take the field tonight with some key players missing. Defender Heather Mitts (hip pointer) and leading scorer Marinette Pichon (toe) are out with injuries, while head coach Mark Krikorian has decided to rest starting defender Erica Iverson and starting midfielder Zhao Lihong, leaving them back in Philadelphia.
Philadelphia returns home on Saturday, August 3 to battle the San Diego Spirit starting at 7 p.m. After the game, the Charge will host an on-field concert by Christian rock band TRUEvibe. For tickets call 215-467-GOAL.
