Chamberlain Called Up to Majors
August 7, 2007 - Hawaii Winter Baseball 2 (HWB 2)
West Oahu CaneFires News Release
Joba Chamberlain became the fourth member of Hawaii Winter Baseball's 2006 class to break into the major leagues after he was called up by the New York Yankees early this afternoon.
The 21-year-old, right-hander was elevated after an impressive minor league showing where he went 9-2 with a 2.45 ERA and 135 strikeouts through 83 1/3 innings in the Yankees farm system. Chamberlain spent last winter with the West Oahu CaneFires, and the hurler was clocked at 98 mph during one of his appearances.
Chamberlain was named to the league's all-star squad, and appeared in the 2007 XM Satellite Radio All-Star Futures Game during July's All-Star weekend in San Francisco.
While he showed promise as a starter in the minors, Chamberlain is expected to begin his Yankee career as a reliever.
As a CaneFire, Chamberlain compiled a 2-2 record in six starts, and notched a 2.63 ERA to go with 46 strikeouts. The 230-pound Nebraska native attended the University of Nebraska, and was drafted in 2006 by the Yankees as a first round supplemental pick.
