CFL names players of the month

Toronto, ON - (November 06, 2008) - Jamel Richardson, Aaron Hunt, Luca Congi and Paris Jackson were named the CFL's top players for the month of October, the Canadian Football League announced today.

Players of the Month are selected for on-field excellence by members of the Canadian football broadcasters.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE MONTH

R - Jamel Richardson - Montreal Alouettes

Montreal Alouettes (Overall: 11-7; October: 2-3)

Highlights / Key Stats:

Jamel Richardson completed a breakout season with the Montreal Alouettes by posting 38 catches for 423 yards and eight touchdowns in five games. In Weeks 15 and 16 alone Richardson caught 24 passes for 274 yards and five touchdowns.

Jamel Richardson finished the regular season fourth in the league with 98 receptions for 1,287 yards and led the CFL with 16 total touchdowns. Richardson was recently named an East Division all-star. Richardson is the third different Montreal Alouette to win the Offensive Player of the Month award, following quarterback Anthony Calvillo and running back Avon Cobourne.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE MONTH

DT - Aaron Hunt - B.C. Lions

B.C. Lions (Overall: 11-7; October: 3-2)

Highlights / Key Stats:

Aaron Hunt recorded nine tackles and three sacks in five October games for the B.C. Lions. Playing on the interior of the defensive line, Hunt played a large role in the B.C. Lions rush defence that gave up the fewest first downs in the league, and the second fewest rushing first downs. The signature play for Hunt in the month came when he got into the Eskimo backfield and forced quarterback Ricky Ray to fumble the ball into the path of defensive end Cam Wake who had a free path to the endzone for a touchdown.

Aaron Hunt has recorded 38 tackles, 11 sacks and two forced fumbles this season, all career highs. Hunt's 11 sacks are second in the league behind only teammate Cam Wake. Hunt was recently named a West Division all-star. The B.C. defensive line has won the defensive player of the month award three times with Cam Wake winning the other two.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE MONTH

K - Luca Congi - Saskatchewan Roughriders

Saskatchewan Roughriders (Overall: 12-6; October: 4-1)

Highlights / Key Stats:

Luca Congi continued his excellent 2008 season by connecting on 8 of 11 field goals in the month, including two fifty-yard field goals and two game winners. Congi was named the special teams player of the week in week 17 when he connected on a 55-yard field goal and kicked the 36-yard game winner despite a strong prairie wind. Congi was also perfect on 20 convert attempts and recorded 45 total points in the month.

Luca Congi has connected on 38 of 44 field goals this season, a league leading 86.4% rate. His 55-yard field goal in week 17 was the longest of the regular season, and his 31.5 yard average distance was second in the league. Congi also made all 50 of his convert attempts and was named the Special Teams player of the year for Saskatchewan.

CANADIAN PLAYER OF THE MONTH

R - ParisJackson - B.C. Lions

B.C. Lions (Overall: 11-7; October: 3-2)

Highlights / Key Stats:

Paris Jackson caught 24 passes for 376 yards and three touchdowns in five games during the month of October. His best performance came in Week 17 against the Edmonton Eskimos when he caught season highs of eight passes and 127 yards and a touchdown in the Lions road victory. Jackson followed that performance up with a five catch, 91 yard and one touchdown performance in Week 18. Both games earned Jackson Canadian player of the Week honours.

Paris Jackson has caught 76 passes for 1,180 yards and eight touchdowns this season, all career highs. Jackson finished the regular season in the top 10 in the league in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. Jackson won the Canadian player of the week award four times and this is his second player of the month award.
