CFL Canadian Football League

CFL names players of the month

Published on October 1, 2004 under Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release

Offensive Player of the Month

RB – Charles Roberts #1

Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Highlights

During September, Roberts rushed for 453 yards on 82 carries and had seven (7) receptions for 59 yards, reaching the end zone five (5) times.

Game Notes:

Roberts is a talented running back. His balance is his best attribute as it is very difficult to knock him off his feet. Roberts is also an excellent receiver and is always a threat coming out of the backfield. As a blocker, he is not afraid to throw his body in front of the biggest defensive tackle. Roberts is the "complete player"; a must for consideration from Winnipeg as a nominee for the Rogers CFL Most Outstanding Player of the Year.

1st Runner Up: QB – Anthony Calvillo #13, Montreal Alouettes

2nd Runner Up: SB – Geroy Simon #81, BC Lions

Judge: Bob Krouse

Defensive Player of the month

LB – John Grace #7

Calgary Stampeders

Highlights

This month, Grace had 18 defensive tackles, five (5) pass knockdowns, one (1) special teams tackle, one (1) fumble recovery and two (2) quarterback sacks.

Game Notes:

Grace has been playing at a high level all season. He always knows exactly were he is supposed to go and what to do. Grace has shown impeccable timing and anticipation going to the ball, and has a knack for making big plays whether it is a sack, a key knockdown or an interception.

Grace should definitely be considered in the running for ADT Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year.

1st Runner Up: LB – A.J. Gass #77, Edmonton Eskimos

2nd Runner Up: LB – Lamar McGriggs #36, Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Judge: Bob Krouse

Lineman of the month

DL – Brent Johnson #97

BC Lions

Highlights

Johnson had 11 defensive tackles, one (1) pass knockdown and two (2) quarterback sacks for the month of September.

Game Notes:

There is a great deal of parity among the defensive lineman this season in the CFL. It is usually something special that makes an individual more visible. Johnson's size and speed has made him one of the top five choices every week in the month of September.

Johnson controls the line of scrimmage, either making tackles or forcing teams to run away from him and as a pass rusher, opposing linemen find him really hard to block. He has great technique and production.

1st Runner Up: DE – Tom Canada #41, Winnipeg Blue Bombers

2nd Runner Up: DE – Anwar Stewart #9, Montreal Alouettes

Judge: Bob Krouse

Special Teams Player of the month

KR/WR – Arland Bruce III #5

Toronto Argonauts

Highlights

In September, Bruce had 339 yards for kickoff returns and 265 yards for punt returns with two (2) touchdowns.

Game Notes:

On his return to the CFL at the Labour Day Classic in Hamilton, Bruce was in peak form and shone on the field. In his next four games, his performance on special teams contributed significantly to the Argonauts' field position.

Bruce appears to glide rough tackles effortlessly – his style is very deceptive. He is a great acquisition for Toronto Argonauts, especially in their hunt to secure a playoff position.

1st Runner Up: KR/WR – Keith Stokes #3, Winnipeg Blue Bombers

2nd Runner Up: K – Paul McCallum #4, Saskatchewan Roughriders

Judge: Bob Krouse
