Newark Bears News Release
(Newark, N.J., Mar. 16, 2010) - The Newark Bears announced today the signing of Kennard Jones for the 2010 season. Jones will once again patrol the center field of Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
"Kennard is an established professional who has put up good numbers in this league," said General Manager R.C. Reuteman. "He has both speed and defensive ability which will solidify our outfield in the upcoming season."
Jones, the son-in-law of Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, begins his eighth season of professional baseball in 2010 and his third stint in the Atlantic League. The Cleveland native started the 2009 season in York and put together a.271 average with 85 hits, 46 runs scored and 21 RBIs for the Revolution. He was traded to the Bears on September 4 and batted.277 in 15 games played.
The 28 year-old was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 3rd Round (85th overall) of 2002 amateur entry draft. He spent five seasons in the Padres organization, peaking with Triple-A Portland of the Pacific Coast League in 2005 and 2006. The former Indiana Hoosier had a career season in 2008 with the Revolution. He finished the year with a.333 average, fourth best in the league, and he recorded a perfect day at the plate going went 6-for-6, including a three-run walk-off home run, which was a team first.
The Newark Bears are a member of the eight-team Atlantic League of Professional Baseball and play their home games at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. For ticket or sponsorship information, call 973-848-1000, or visit www.newarkbears.com.
