Cedar Rapids Roughriders Sign Andrei Bakanov to Tender

Published on April 19, 2018 under United States Hockey League (USHL) News Release

The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders announced the signing of forward Andrei Bakanov to a tender agreement for the 2018-19 season. Bakanov, a native of Moskva, Russia, is committed to play college hockey at the University of Michigan and is eligible for the 2020 NHL Draft.

Now in its seventh year, the USHL tender process allows teams to sign up to two 2002 birth year players prior to the 2018 USHL Phase I Draft, which takes place on May 7.

Bakanov, a six-foot-two, 192-pound forward, spent the 2017-18 season with the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies, totaling an impressive 112 points (57G, 55A) in 77 total games between the program's midget and U16 levels.

Bakanov is the first tender signing for Cedar Rapids this season. The signing of Bakanov will replace the RoughRiders' first round draft choice in the 2018 USHL Phase I Draft.

If Cedar Rapids tenders a second player, that signing would take the place of a second-round selection in the 2018 USHL Phase I Draft. The final day for USHL teams to sign a tender is Sunday, May 6, 2018. Each tendered player will be on their respective team's roster the next season and play at least 55% of the team's regular season games.

"We are very excited to welcome Andrei to the RoughRider family," said Cedar Rapids head coach and general manager Mark Carlson. "He has a nice blend of skill, size and character and we look forward to helping him develop as a hockey player and as a person. His strong work ethic will enable Andrei to develop into an excellent hockey player."

Bakanov becomes the seventh player signed to a tender for the 2018-19 season, joining Ruben Rafkin (Tri-City Storm), Chase Bradley (Omaha Lancers), Colby Ambrosio (Tri-City Storm), Alex Gaffney (Muskegon Lumberjacks), Ben Schoen (Youngstown Phantoms) and Wyatt Schingoethe (Waterloo Black Hawks).

Bakanov is the eighth player to be tendered by Cedar Rapids since the start of the USHL tender process, joining Chris Birdsall (2012), Paul O'Connor (2012), Ivan Provorov (2013), Derek Daschke (2014), Hugh McGing (2014), Liam Walsh (2015) and T.J. Walsh (2016).
