***Saints over Royales 6-4; Martinez triple makes the difference***
The Trois-Rivieres Saints scored three times in the seventh inning on their way to a 6-4 victory over the Montreal Royales Thursday at Le Stade de Trois-Rivieres.
Saints rightfielder Samir Martinez ripped a bases-loaded triple to right field in the seventh off of Royales reliver Manny Bermudez. Bermudez had come in to put out pitcher David Gomez' fire, after the Venezuelan right-hander had loaded the bases with Saints batters. Gomez took the loss, dropping to 1-3 on the season.
Saints DH Ed Campaniello doubled, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs.
BC's Robert Gauthier (1-3) picked up his first win, going six innings, allowing seven hits and four runs, while notching a pair of K's and walks along the way.
Team Canada member and former Expos farmhand Julian Tucker earned his third save, working a perfect final frame.
Sammy Torreira, Ruben Francisco and Montreal-native Dominic Campeau each had a pair of hits in a losing cause for the Royales, who have now dropped five of their last six contests.
***Williams wins Wild West pitching showdown with Felix; Outlaws drop Legends 2-0***
Shad Williams threw a complete game three-hit shutout Thursday night as the Calgary Outlaws beat the Saskatoon Legends 2-0 at Ross Wells Park in Moose Jaw.
The second game of the "Wild West" Showcase Series saw a pitcher's duel worthy of the moniker.
Williams (3-2), was masterful allowing only three hits over nine innings, while striking out five and walking only one hitter.
Legends' ace Felix Bienvenido (5-2) deserved better. The big right-hander K'd 11 over eight innings of work, scattering five hits and allowing only one run, this courtesy of Outlaws' All-Star Galindo Gomez. The CBL's most potent power threat sent a Bienvenido offering over the centrefield fence in the sixth inning for his league-leading 10th home run.
Excluding that one pitch to Gomez, Bienvenido's performance was certainly good enough to earn victory on most any other occasion. However tonight former Major Leaguer Williams pitched in accordance with his resume.
The rest of the Outlaws offensive output was primarily the work of Gomez' fellow All-Star rep, Jhensy Sandoval.
The 24-year old Dominican smacked a double and a triple, while scoring Calgary's other run in his four trips to the plate. He also stole his 14th base of the season, moving him within two of league leader and fellow Outlaw Pedro Santana who paces the circuit with 16 thefts.
The win vaults the Outlaws into sole possession of top spot in the CBL's Western Division.
***Perez, Conway lead Heat to 7-0 win over Caps***
The Kelowna Heat rode the arm of Jorge Perez and the bat of Rob Conway to a 7-0 shutout victory over the Victoria Capitals Thursday evening at Royal Athletic Park.
Heat starter Perez (5-2) threw a complete game masterpiece, striking out 11 Victoria hitters and walking none, while scattering seven hits (five singles and a pair of doubles).
Juneau, Alaska's Rob Conway smacked a pair of home runs for the Heat, including a solo shot in the fourth and a two-run blast in the seventh.
All-Star selections Luis Iglesias (4-for-5) and Dominic Woody (2-for-4, HR, RBI) provided additional punch for Kelowna, who pounded out 12 hits against Victoria pitchers Brad Rogers, Craig Mosher and Hector Soriano. Rogers (3-3) took the loss, working 4 2/3 innings in the first game back from his recent Team Canada appearance.
Luis Landarta and Trent Otis each collected a pair of hits for the Caps, who drop their third straight decision.
***Niagara-London game rained out***
Wet weather forced a cancellation of tonight's Niagara-London tilt at Labatt Park in London, Ontario.
The game will be made up this Saturday, July 12, as part of a doubleheader. First pitch is 3:05 pm.
