1. 2003-04 CBA-TO-NBA CALL-UPS

The CBA has produced eight CBA-to-NBA call-ups since the 2003-04 season began on November 14. Over the past weekend, two more were added to the list as Sioux Falls Skyforce guard Darrick Martin was called-up to the Minnesota Timberwolves, and Dakota Wizards guard Maurice Carter signed a 10-day contract with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Martin -
In 17 games (16 started) with the Skyforce this season, Martin averaged 19.5 points, 7.9 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per game. He was traded to Sioux Falls from the Yakima Sun Kings on December 20, after posting 11.3 points and 3.6 assists per contest, in three games played for Yakima.

Last season, as a member of the Sun Kings, the UCLA alum averaged 18.3 points and 6.9 assists in 20 regular season games played. In five postseason games, he posted 23.0 points and 5.8 assists per contest as he led Yakima to the 2003 CBA Title, and was named the 2003 Playoff Most Valuable Player.

Martin joins center Oliver Miller, who was called up from the Dakota Wizards on December 13, and guard Anthony Goldwire, who was called up from the Yakima Sun Kings on January 7, as call-ups to Minnesota this season. He will fill an open spot on the Timberwolves roster.

Carter –
In 14 games played with the Wizards this season, Carter averaged 23.4 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. He was traded to Dakota from the Gary Steelheads on December 12, after posting 15.4 points and 3.1 rebounds per contest in 14 games played for Gary.

The Louisiana State alum also posted 10 points, three rebounds and one assist in the 20th CBA All-Star Classic on January 20 in Yakima, WA, as a reserve guard for the National Team, who beat the American squad 105-103. On Tuesday, January 27, Carter scored a CBA league-high 44 points on 15 of 22 shooting (68 percent) from the floor, in a 123-106 victory over the Idaho Stampede.

Carter, who is filling Kobe Bryant's roster spot on the Lakers while he is on the Injured List, joins forward Sean Lampley, center Oliver Miller, and forward Kaniel Dickens as Dakota Wizards players who have received call-ups to the NBA this season.

2. CBA PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Dakota Wizards forward Chris Porter was named the CBA Player of the Week for the week of January 25 – 31.

The 6-foot-7, 220-pound forward averaged 22.3 points and 6.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.0 steals per game during the week, while shooting 60.0 percent (30 of 50) from the floor and 83.8 percent (26 of 31) from the free-throw line. He led the Wizards to a perfect 4-0 record during the week, despite losing teammates Kaniel Dickens to a 48-hour tryout with the Los Angeles Lakers, and guard Maurice Carter who signed a 10-day contract with the Lakers on Friday, January 30.

In a 123-105 victory over the Idaho Stampede on January 27, Porter posted 21 points, eight rebounds, five assists and five steals, as he led his team in both rebounds and assists for the game. Three nights later he led the Wizards with 31 points, while also adding nine rebounds and four assists, as Dakota beat the Rockford Lightning 129-120.

Other players receiving consideration were Gary's Jemeil Rich (16.7 ppg, 10.7 apg), and Idaho's DeSean Hadley (23.6 ppg, 7.0 rpg).

3. CBA COACH OF THE MONTH

Dakota Wizards Head Coach Dave Joerger was named the League Coach of the Month for the month of January. The award is the second of the 2003-04 season for Joerger, who was also named Coach of the Month for November after posting a 6-1 record and 5.1 quarter-point average.

For the month of January, the Moorhead State (Minn. 97) alum led the Wizards to an 11-2 record and a 5.0 quarter-point average (65.5 total), including a six-game winning streak at the beginning of the month, and a current five-game winning streak to close out January. Dakota was 8-1 at home and 3-1 on the road as they held on to first place in the league with an overall quarter-point average of 4.6 for the season.

The Wizards suffered their only losses of the month at home against Rockford on the 18th, and on the road against Gary on the 23rd. During the team's current winning streak Dakota is averaging 5.9 quarter-points per game.

Since the 2003-04 season began, Joerger has sent four players to the NBA (Sean Lampley, Oliver Miller, Kaniel Dickens, Maurice Carter). He also coached the National Team to a 105-103 victory in the 20th CBA All-Star Classic, on January 20 in Yakima, WA. It was his second straight All-Star game victory, adding him to a group of six CBA coaches who have two or more All-Star victories (Bill Klucas ‘82,'84 – Phil Jackson ‘83,'85 – Bill Musselman ‘87,'88 – Eric Musselman ‘90,'92,'97 – Dan Panaggio ‘93,'00 – Flip Saunders ‘94,'95).

Other coaches receiving consideration for Coach of the Month honors were the Idaho Stampede's Larry Krystkowiak (4.6 quarter-point average, 8-2 record in January) and the Sioux Falls Skyforce's Trevor Gleeson (4.3 quarter-point average, 8-7 record in January).

4. CLIMBING THE RANKS
Sioux Falls forward Leonard White began the season ranked 24th all-time in rebounding in the CBA with 1,623. With 333 rebounds this season, White has moved into 15th place at 1,956, and is 53 rebounds away from moving ahead of Ronnie Grandison (2,009) into 14th place.
Idaho Stampede guard Randy Livingston has notched 199 assists this season, moving him into 23rd place all-time with 1,176. He is nine away from catching David Rivers for 22nd place with 1,185, and 55 away from cracking into the top 20 all-time.
Dakota Wizards Head Coach Dave Joerger has moved into 4th place in All-Time CBA Coaches Winning Percentages, with a career regular season winning percentage of .667 (80-40). With a current 23-9 record, Joerger has vaulted ahead of coaches like Flip Saunders (253-137, .649), Dan Panaggio (313-191, .621) and Phil Jackson (117-90, .565). Due to a minimum of 100 regular-season games needed, Joerger did not qualify to be ranked prior to the 2003-04 season beginning.
