Dakota's Maurice Baker Earns Season's First POW Honor
The Continental Basketball Association announced Nov. 28 that Dakota Wizards guard Maurice Baker has been named the CBA Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 18 through Nov. 27. Baker becomes the first recipient of the POW award for the 2005-06 season, which this year will honor one player each week for the entire eight-team league.
Baker averaged 23.8 points, 9.0 rebounds, 8.2 assists and 5.0 steals in five games for the Wizards, who lead the Western Conference with 21.0 quarter points (4.2 QP avg.) and a 3-2 record. Baker recorded a career-high 33 points on Nov. 26 in a 116-114 victory over Idaho. He also put up over 20 points against Sioux Falls on Nov. 19 (26 pts.) and Nov. 22 against Yakama (28 pts.).
Rookie T.J. Thompson Has a Veteran Night
Albany guard and 2005 No. 1 draft pick T.J. Thompson scored a CBA season-high 53 points in a 102-101 victory over Gary on Nov. 27. Thompson scored more than half of the Patroons' total points and put up the most in a CBA game since Dakota's Melvin Sanders scored 54 against Rockford on March 13, 2005. Thompson connected on 16-of-26 FGs, including 8-of-11 from behind the arc. The George Washington Univ. graduate also hit on all 13 free-throw attempts. Thompson is leading the CBA in scoring at 35.4 ppg. He's improved his point total in every game that he's played in with 28 points in his debut, followed by 29, 31, 36, and 53.
Albany Patroons (2-3, 15.0 QP, 3.0 Avg., 3rd Eastern Conference)
The Patroons come off their first road win of the year, a 102-101 thriller vs. Gary on Nov. 27... the most consistent performer for the Patroons so far this season has been Albany's #1 draft pick, guard T.J. Thompson... Thompson scored 53 points on Nov. 27 to lead the Patroons to their one point victory and nomination for CBA Player of the Week... the Patroons return home on Nov. 30 vs. Gary with an overall record of 2-3... a strong showing in front of the home crowd on Wednesday can bring the Patroons back to .500 in the early season.
Dakota Wizards (3-2, 21.0 QP, 4.2 Avg., 1st Western Conference)
The Wizards kicked off their home-opening weekend in style, winning a pair of games from the Idaho Stampede and collecting 11.5 of the 14 quarter points... despite being the CBA's best home team since joining the league four years ago, Dakota had dropped two of their last three home openers... opening on the road for the first time in the 11-year history of the franchise gave the Wizards a little more time to work out the kinks this year... starting point guard Mo Baker took matters into his own hands last weekend posting a career-high 33 points in the Nov. 26 win against Idaho and led the Wizards into first place in the Western Conference... the Wizards will look to extend their two-game win streak as they head to Michigan and Gary for a quick road trip this Thursday and Saturday... all games can be listened to on KFYR Radio.
Gary Steelheads (3-2, 20.5 QP, 4.1 Avg., 2nd Eastern Conference)
For the week of November 21st, Gary posted a 2-1 record, beginning with back-to-back wins over the Michigan... the Steelheads defeated the Mayhem 93-82 at the Genesis Center on Nov. 22... Randy Holcomb tossed in 23 points with 15 rebounds while Jimmie "Snap" Hunter added 23 points and handed out a team-high five assists... after a break for turkey, the Steelheads again prevailed over the Mayhem at the L.C. Walker Arena in Muskegon, 115-107, on Nov. 25... the only blemish on their record was a 102-101 loss to Albany at the Genesis Center on Nov. 27... Holcomb scored a CBA career-high 28 points in defeat, along with 12 rebounds.
Idaho Stampede (1-4, 10.0 QP, 2.0 Avg., 4th Western Conference)
Eric Chenowith set the all-time Stampede rebound record for a single game with 25 on Nov. 26. This broke the mark of 24 that was held by Jerome Lane (Dec. 1, 1998 vs. Yakima)... the Stampede in association with the CBA on Nov. 29 announced that Athletes.com will be the title sponsor for the 26th Annual CBA All-Star Classic. The game will be held at the Qwest Arena in Boise on Jan. 17, 2006, with the Stampede serving as host of the event... Idaho is hosting a "Prep & Pro Tripleheader" on Nov. 30 by partnering with two local high schools (Bishop Kelly and Boise) for the special night in Qwest Arena. The JV game begins at 4:30 p.m. while the varsity game will tipoff 15 minutes after the JV game ends, sometime between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. Idaho is slated to tipoff vs. Sioux Falls at 8 p.m.
Michigan Mayhem (1-4, 12.5 QP, 2.5 Avg., 4th Eastern Conference)
G Kevin Sweetwyne recently signed with the Mayhem, his second season back in Muskegon. Last year he averaged 12.8 points per game, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.1 assists. Unfortunately, his season was cut short due to an injury. Besides his two years of CBA experience, Sweetwyne has also had experience playing for the Southern California Summer Pro League (Dada Team), and attended the B.I.G. Free Agent Camp overseas in 2001.
Rockford Lightning (5-1, 28.0 QP, 4.7 Avg., 1st Eastern Conference)
Rockford moved into first place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 5-1 (28.0 pts) to start the team's 20th anniversary season in the Rockford community... the Lightning currently hold a four-game winning streak heading into this weekend's road trip to Yakama and Idaho... Marlon Parmer leads the team in scoring and assists averaging 25.7 points (fifth in the league) and 6.2 assists (fourth in the league) per game... Ronnie Fields is second on the team in scoring with 18.2 points per game to start the season, but leads the team in rebounds per game averaging 7.7 (10th in the league)... Lightning rookies have been a large part of the team's success in the early season. Roger Powell Jr. is one of only three Lightning players to start all six games this season (Fields and Parmer are the others). Powell is currently averaging 13.5 points and 6.3 rebounds a game... Marcus Campbell has started 5-of-6 games at center for the team, while Kenyon Gamble is leading the league in blocks with 3.8 a game... Head Coach Chris Daleo needs one more victory to move into third place all-time in wins as a head coach for the Rockford Lightning. His regular season record of 88-62 and his .587 winning percentage is highest among Rockford coaches... the Lightning have waived forward Paul McMillan and activated guard Lenny Cooke from the IR for Friday night's game in Yakama.
Sioux Falls Skyforce (3-2, 20.0 QP, 4.0 Avg., 2nd Western Conference)
The Skyforce picked up its first road win of the season by downing Yakama in Yakima, 122-102, on Nov. 29... the 'Force had the biggest crowd in the CBA this season as 5,914 fans showed up on opening night to celebrate the second championship in franchise history... Brandon Hunter was considered for CBA Player of the Week after averaging 28.0 points and 13.5 rebounds per contest in four games... Hunter is the only player in the CBA this season to have a double-double in each game he has played in... Stephen Graham has had a great start to his rookie season in the CBA as he is averaging 25.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per contest... his 25.8 ppg is second among rookies (T.J Thompson, Albany, 35.4 ppg)... the 'Force is averaging a league-leading 119.5 ppg through the first four contests... the highest season scoring average in franchise history is 117.3 ppg during the 1990-91 season... the 'Force will hit the road for three games this week as they will play at Yakama on Nov. 29th and then head to Boise for two games with the Idaho Stampede on Nov. 30 and Dec. 2.
Yakama Sun Kings (3-3, 20.0 QP, 3.3 Avg., 3rd Western Conference)
Yakama tied a franchise record by hitting 15 three-pointers in a 128-121 road win at Sioux Falls on Nov. 25... Antwain Barbour (7-of-11) and Geno Carlisle (7-of-10) both hit seven shots from beyond the arch to pace the Sun Kings... Barbour scored a career-high 33 points while Carlisle knocked down 27 points... through the first 10 days of the season, Barbour is leading the Sun Kings in scoring, averaging 25.6 ppg on 52.2% shooting from the field and 45.9% from three-point range... Cheyne Gadson is second in scoring, averaging 17.6 ppg and dishing out a team-high 7.2 assists per game... Leonard White is averaging a double-double, scoring 16.6 ppg and grabbing a team-high 10.6 rpg... after five games, the Sun Kings have attempted 37 more three-pointers than their opponents, but have shot 60 less free throws, an average of 12.0 less per game.
