CBA awards Governor's Trophy to regular season champs
Published on March 20, 2007 under Continental Basketball Association 1 (CBA 1) News Release
ALBANY, NY (March 20, 2007) - The Continental Basketball Association is pleased to announce that the CBA team with the best quarter point average at the end of the regular season will now receive a special trophy to commemorate that honor - the Governor's Trophy, marking the return of one of the CBA's original championship awards. The Yakama Sun Kings are this year's recipient of the Governor's Trophy.
The Governor's Trophy was originally struck in 1962 to honor the champion of the Eastern Professional Basketball League, as the CBA was known at that time. The Governor's Trophy was awarded from 1962 to 1970, and replaced the chalice received by the league's playoff champion (that trophy was known as the "President's Cup"). When the EPBL renamed itself the Eastern Basketball Association, the Governor's Trophy was retired, and is currently on display to the public at Seward's Steak Shop, 202 South 17th Street in Allentown, Pa., as the Allentown Jets were the last franchise to win the award. The current Governor's Trophy is a faithful recreation of that original prize, and will now be given to the team with the highest quarter-point total at the end of the regular season.
"As every knowledgeable basketball fan knows, the CBA is the oldest continuous professional basketball league in the United States," says Dennis Truax, Director of Operations for the CBA, "and to be able to bring back a championship trophy from our earliest years, and have the opportunity to put it back into circulation is a real honor for me personally. Some great players have hoisted this trophy in the past, and we are pleased that we can now continue this tradition into the new millennium."
The following is a list of CBA franchises who were the league's regular-season champion, based on either quarter-point average, or in years where quarter-points were not used, on winning percentage.
