Cats Beat the Jacks in Home Opener
October 3, 2015 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Wichita Falls Wildcats News Release
The Cats did not disappoint in their home opener on Saturday night, as they took down the Odessa Jackalopes by a score of 5-3.
The first period was very evenly played, as teams exchanged scoring chances for six and a half minutes until Garrett Van Wyhe redirected a Jeff Baum shot from the blue line. Baum did well to keep the puck alive to create the chance, as it came inches away from crossing the line. Just five minutes later, however, the Jacks responded. Zach Zech buried the puck between the legs of Justin Kapelmaster to tie the game up at one heading into the second period.
Shots were even at 8 apiece going into the second, which began with a Luke Schultz goal just 2:19 into the period. It was Schultz's first goal as a Jackalope, and it was a shot that Kapelmaster would certainly like to have back. However, the Cats fought back with two goals from Aleksi Poikola and Max Reisinger to regain the lead for Wichita Falls headiing into the third.
Once again, the Jacks struck early in the period. Gray Marr redirected the puck past Kapelmaster for his third goal of the year to tie the game up at 3. From that point on, however, it was all Wildcats.
The Cats outshot the Jacks 16-3 in the third period, and Reisinger and Nick Rosa each scored to give the Cats the 5-3 win.
The Cats will be traveling to Corpus Christi next Wednesday to take on the IceRays on October 8th.
