Casadilla's Record Outing Paces Spikes to 6-1 Win over 'Cutters

State College Spikes News Release
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Franyel Casadilla tied a State College Spikes franchise record with 10 strikeouts over 7 innings of one-hit, shutout ball, and the Spikes poured it on late to earn a 6-1 victory over the Williamsport Crosscutters on Wednesday night at BB&T Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field.
Casadilla (4-1) became the second pitcher in six days to tie the Spikes' (32-32) single-game strikeout record against the Crosscutters (26-37), following Jacob Schlesener on Thursday. Like Schlesener, Casadilla's outing was also curtailed by rain, with a 29-minute delay between the top and bottom of the eighth inning forcing an end to his night.
The right-hander only allowed a Keudy Bocio bunt single in the fourth, a walk and two hit batsmen over his seven frames and struck out the side in the seventh to finish his historic start.
Casadilla has now allowed just one run over his last 21 innings on the mound.
The Spikes are now in fifth place in the New York-Penn League Wild Card race, sitting three games back of Auburn with 12 games remaining. State College is also 3.5 games behind first-place Mahoning Valley in the Pinckney Division.
State College took the first lead of the game in the sixth on Wadye Ynfante's run-scoring fielder's choice, then extended the advantage to 2-0 on a Williamsport error.
After Casadilla left the mound, Seth Lancaster doubled to lead off the bottom of the eighth against Edgar Gonzalez (1), then scored on Jesus Henriquez's groundout.
The Spikes put up four runs in the ninth to put it away, however. Stanley Espinal produced his 36th RBI of the year with a single to score the first run of the frame, and Whalen tied Espinal for the team lead in RBI with a two-run double of his own. Cameron Knight then completed the scoring with a single to bring in Whalen.
Gonzalez picked up his first professional save after giving up just Lancaster's double and striking out one batter over two innings on the mound.
Williamsport starter Manuel Silva (1-5) took the loss after giving up two runs, one of them earned, on four hits and three walks over six innings. Silva also struck out eight batters in the effort.
Edwin Figuera recorded a three-hit game for the Spikes, his fourth of the year.
Thursday, the Spikes return home to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for a 7:05 p.m. matchup against the Auburn Doubledays (Washington Nationals), the current New York-Penn League Wild Card leaders. The matchup will begin a three-game set, and feature left-hander Eli Kraus (2-1) on the hill for State College against Auburn right-hander Reid Schaller (1-1).
