Carolina Speed Stall Harrisburg Stampede 51-36

Charlotte, NC (April 8, 2011) - The Harrisburg Stampede's early season frustration continued as they fell to 0-4 with a 51-36 loss to the Carolina Speed on Friday night in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Stampede were only able to muster four touchdowns on the night, including two in the final minute of play, while the Speed (1-3) offense posted seven touchdowns on their way to their first win of the season.

The Stampede stayed close to the Speed in the first quarter with two defensive stops, including an interception by Jermaine Thaxton, and a field goal by J.R. Cipra; trailing only 6-3. However, with just five seconds remaining in the first period of play Antonio Miller connected with Clyde Logan to provide the Speed a 12-3 lead.

In the second quarter both offenses got on track as the Speed scored twice on Miller to Speedy Williamson touchdown strikes and a TD run by Tank Cunningham. The Stampede countered with an Andre Coles to Collis Martin scoring connection and a Eugene Goodman touchdown scamper. The half ended with Carolina holding a 34-17 edge.

The third quarter was relatively quiet with the only points in the first ten plus minutes coming on a J.R. Cipra field goal. With 4:38 left in the quarter the Stampede had an apparent defensive stop, but Carolina faked a field goal attempt and Cunningham scored to boost the Speed lead to 41-20. Another Stampede drive was thwarted by penalties and a missed field goal attempt.

Miller opened the fourth quarter scoring with a touchdown pass to former Stampede player Silas Daniels to increase the Carolina margin to 48-20. The Stampede then had a long drive to the Carolina four, but after several penalties Coles tossed an interception on fourth down to end the drive.

With 2:09 left in the game Bruce Reinecker booted a field goal to provide Carolina's last points of the night. The Stampede then added two late scores on a Coles to Archie Smith touchdown pass and a Goodman run. Goodman also added two pointers after both TDs to provide the final score of 51-36.

On the night Coles had two touchdown passes, one to Collis Martin and one to Archie Smith and Eugene Goodman added two touchdown runs and two, two-point runs. J.R. Cipra totaled eight points with two field goals and two extra points.

Miller tallied five touchdown passes for the Speed including two to Clyde Logan, two to Speedy Williamnson, and one to Silas Daniels. Tank Cunningham had two touchdown runs. Bruce Reinecker had seven points for Carolina with one field goal, three extra point kicks, and one uno. Miller also had a two-point conversion toss.

The Stampede now head to Erie to take on the Explosion on Friday, April 15th in search of their first victory of the 2011 season.
