Carolina hosts Cleveland on FSC
Published on May 29, 2009 under United Soccer League Championship (USL) News Release
TAMPA, FL - Last week on Fox Soccer Channel, RailHawks coach Martin Rennie celebrated his birthday and return to Cleveland with a 3-0 thumping of his former club. This week, the City Stars head to Carolina for an immediate shot at vengeance on Fox Soccer Channel. Kick off is set for 8:00 pm ET Friday.
Three variations of long balls from the Carolina RailHawks shredded the Cleveland defense on the turf of Middlefield Cheese Stadium last week as the two sides met for the first time although numerous players were very familiar with one another, having played for the 2008 USL-2 Champions.
The first strike came 18 minutes in when Daniel Paladini sent the ball up the right flank to forward Andriy Budnyy, who volleyed it past Cleveland goalkeeper Hunter Gilstrap into the back of the net.
Just three minutes later the RailHawks would scored again when Paladini sent a long switch cross-field to John Cunliffe on the left wing. Cunliffe beat his mark and brought the ball into the box before chipping it right over Gilstrap.
Then the hole got deeper for the City Stars as they went down to ten men in the 31st minute when midfielder Alioune Gueye was ejected for a late challenge on Carolina midfielder Brad Rusin.
The second half began the same way as the first ended, with the RailHawks continuing to attack, but Cleveland had two real strong chances to score in the 47th and 65th minutes but were not able to convert on either chance to reduce the deficit.
In the 77th minute a long ball out of the back from Jeremy Tolleson to the opposite right found a RailHawk open at the top of the 18 yard box. Joseph Kabwe picked the ball up and easily beat Gilstrap to put the game away and fix the score at 3-0.
Next Week: The Charleston Battery visit the expansion Austin Aztex in the first-ever meeting between the two clubs Friday, June 5 at 8:00 pm ET.
