Carolina Diamonds Players Awarded League Best
SALISBURY - The Carolina Diamonds, the Charlotte area's professional fastpitch softball team, are headed to the Windy City for this weekend's series against the Chicago Bandits.
The team takes the road trip after shortstop Bianca Mejia was awarded the National Pro Fastpitch league's Defensive Player of the Week and pitcher Katie Burkhart was named NPF Pitcher of the Week for the second time.
The Diamonds (9-14) offense is also at the top of the league and powered by Rachel Folden's league leading .389 batting average. Folden, Kelsi Weseman and Bejia are also tied with Akron Racers second baseman Nicole Pauly for second place in home runs with five apiece. Folden and USSSA Pride catcher Kristyn Sandberg are also tied for second most RBIs with 15 each.
"Hopefully they continue to see the ball well and just continue to hit," head coach Lisa Navas said.
Carolina will be playing the best team in the NPF (15-9), but a team which is coming off a three game losing streak. The Diamonds have been boosted by the signing of Jazlyn Lunceford, who joined her University of Alabama teammate Amanda Locke on the team last weekend after the two helped Alabama win the 2012 NCAA Women's College World Series.
"I am always going to want to play softball. And then when this opportunity came up it was just something that I really felt that I would regret if I didn't do," Lunceford said.
The fact that Chicago is coming off a losing series is not indicative of what the Diamonds can expect from them this weekend as each game is different and Chicago still leads the NPF.
"Honestly, every game is a new situation and depends on how the team is coming together at that particular time. Hopefully they continue what they have been doing, but we can't control that. We can only get some fire going and continue to be as successful as we have," Navas said.
