Carolina Diamonds Dominate Home Opener

June 14, 2012 - National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) - Carolina Diamonds News Release

Kannapolis - The Carolina Diamonds offense and defense dominated the field Thursday night at Kannapolis' CMC-NorthEast Stadium in the team's home opener against the Chicago Bandits, winning 5-1.

"This game is a perfect example of what happens with execution," head coach Teresa Wilson said.

Katie Burkhart threw a complete game for the Diamonds (2-3) and struck out six while GiOnna DiSalvatore and Angeline Quiocho both had home runs for a strong hitting offense that worked the count all night against the Bandits (3-2).

"It was a good complete game tonight. You had hitting, you had defense, you had great pitching," Wilson said.

Burkhart's pitching was on target and continued to display command of a variety of pitches all evening.

"It felt good. I felt like I was getting in sync. I have got a long ways to go, a full season ahead of me, but I feel good," she said.

Burkhart was a little skeptical of pitching a complete game after two starts where she went two or three innings apiece, but she had confidence she could do it.

"I know it's in me. Usually I feel good the longer I go in a game. And then today it was finding that trust and getting all the dynamics back in my pitching," she said.

Diamonds catcher Rachel Folden went 3-3 and drove in a run on top of calling a great game too.

"It was fun to see some familiar faces in the other dugout and play against them, but we are definitely focused on what we want to do and we just really came out and tried to make a statement with that game," Folden said. The Diamonds continue the home stand in Kannapolis against the Bandits through Sunday afternoon.
