Carolina Courage 2, Boston Breakers 2

BOSTON, MA - With a two-goal performance by Dagny Mellgren the Boston Breakers (2-3-4, 10 pts.) battled the Carolina Courage (4-1-3, 15 pts.) to a 2-2 draw on Saturday evening at Nickerson Field.

Mellgren evened the match at 2-2 in the 49th minute with her second goal of the night. Bettina Wiegmann fed a through pass to Maren Meinert on the right side of the box. Meinert then crossed the ball to the far post where Mellgren was positioned. The Norwegian headed Meinert's cross into the net for the score. Wiegmann earned her third assist of the night on the play. Meinert was credited with an assist on Mellgren's goal for the second time of the match.

Carolina took an early 1-0 lead with a goal by Danielle Fotopoulos in the sixth minute. On a Staci Burt throw-in, midfielder Hege Riise flicked the ball to Fotopoulos who in turn found the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season. Both Riise and Burt were credited with assists on the play.

Boston tied the match in the 14th minute. Mellgren was able to head the ball by Carolina goalkeeper Kristin Luckenbill for the Breakers first goal in two matches. The play began when Kristine Lilly got the ball to Meinet on a throw-in. Meinert took the ball a flicked it over the Courage defense. Mellgren was able to connect her head to the Meinert pass for her fourth goal of the season. Meinert and Lilly both recorded assists on the score.

Riise regained the lead for Carolina in the 32nd minute with her third goal of the season. Burt sent a pass to Birgit Prinz who was on the left side of field. Prinz then crossed the ball to Riise, who was position on the right side of the goal, striking it into the net for the 2-1 lead. The assists were the second of the night for Burt and the first of Prinz' WUSA career. The German striker has now recorded a point in her second straight match.

With the draw, Boston remains undefeated at home (1-0-3), while Carolina has yet to taste defeat on the road (2-0-2).
