Charleston, SC. The San Jose Earthquakes won the 2005 Carolina Challenge Cup after defeating the Charleston Battery, Friday night at Blackbaud Stadium. San Jose scored a late goal to down a game Charleston Battery side in the two teams first ever meeting. Substitute midfielder Brad Davis netted his third goal of the tournament unassisted in the 85th minute to win the game for the 'Quakes.
The win was the Earthquakes second of the tournament, they defeated DC United in the first game, and ties with last years winners the Columbus Crew in their second match.
The first chance of the match fell to the Charleston Battery in the 13th minute. The ball was worked out to midfielder Chris Goos on the left side. He fired a hard right-footed shot at the goal but Earthquakes 'keeper Jon Conway was well positioned and he took it cleanly at the near post.
In the 35th minute the Earthquakes responded as Tighe Dombrowski worked a one-two with Ian Russell at the edge of the box. Russell fired a low shot after receiving the return pass forcing a diving save from Battery goalkeeper, Chris Doyle.
In the 38th minute striker, Usiel Vasquez almost broke the deadlock for Charleston. Vasquez found some space at the right side of the box as he ran onto a through ball. He cut inside his defender onto his right foot but his shot went straight at Conway who caught it cleanly.
The game was very even in the second half with both sides creating good chances. Forward Greg Simmonds brought a superb save out of Conway in the 70th minute. Simmonds tried a full-volley from 20-yards out that Conway dove to turn around the post for a corner.
The winning goal came with less than five minutes remaining after San Jose were awarded a corner-kick. Brad Davis fought his way past Battery midfielder, Ugo Okoye and hit a stinging drive from wide on the right into the far corner of the goal.
