Jackson Generals News Release
(Zebulon, NC) April 29th- Chris Volstad limited West Tenn to just a run on four hits over seven innings of work as the Carolina Mudcats defeated the Diamond Jaxx 7-1 in game one of a five game series from Five County Stadium. The loss drops the Diamond Jaxx to third place in the Northern Division, 1.5 games behind idle Huntsville.
Volstad (3-0) was red-hot on a very chilly night in Zebulon as the right-hander retired fifteen of the first sixteen batters that he faced. Volstad didn't walk anyone and struckout eight batters in a dominating performance. Lee Mitchell provided more than enough offense for the Mudcats, going 3-4 with four runs batted in on the night. Brett Hayes chipped in with a homer and two RBI's.
Doug Fister suffered his first loss of the 2008 season. Fister (3-1) allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings. He walked four and struckout three. Shawn Garrett provided the offense, driving in Mike Wilson with the only Diamond Jaxx run in the sixth inning. Three of the four Diamond Jaxx hits took place in the sixth inning.
Game two of the five game series takes place on Wednesday night at 6:15 CDT. Right-hander and former Carolina Mudcat Rich Dorman (3-1 2.25) gets the start for the Diamond Jaxx. Carolina will start righty Ryan Tucker (1-1 1.30).
