Carlson Back with Mammoth on Roster Deadline Day
March 20, 2014 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Colorado Mammoth News Release
DENVER - The Colorado Mammoth welcomed back defenseman Nick Carlson on Thursday hours prior to the NLL's final roster deadline, signing him to a contract for the remainder of the season. Carlson played eight seasons in Denver, and inked a deal as an unrestricted free agent.
"We needed to solidify our defense," said Mammoth president & general manager Steve Govett. "Nick is a local guy with a wealth of experience with the Mammoth and the new coaching staff, and I expect him to contribute down the stretch."
Earlier this week, Govett worked the phones prior to the NLL trade deadline but was unable to find the right deal.
"We weren't going to sacrifice the long-term vitality of our franchise, and those were the only offers we had on the table from other teams," explained the GM.
In fact, only one swap was made league-wide at the quietest trade deadline in years.
Forward Adam Jones will be back in the line-up next weekend after an eight-week hiatus due to injuries. The 24-year-old was leading the league in goals, points and forced turnovers when a shoulder injury on February 1 shut him down. Jones would have returned to the line-up earlier this month had it not been for an unrelated setback - a fluke injury that saw him take a ball to the eye.
"We immediately thought of the eye injury that essentially ended the career of (former Mammoth forward) Alex Gajic," said Govett. "Precautionary measures were implemented with Adam, and we weren't going to take any risks."
The health of forward Casey Powell, who suffered a lower-body injury in Colorado's overtime win over Calgary on March 8, is greatly improved. He's expected to return to action next Saturday.
Colorado also announced that it has placed defenseman Mike McNamara on the Injured Reserve List. He's expected to return to action later this season.
After a bye this weekend, the Mammoth returns to HealthONE Field at Pepsi Center on Sat., Mar. 29 at 7pm MT to take on the Philadelphia Wings on Western Night. Tickets to the game are on sale now at the Pepsi Center Box Office, all Altitude Tickets outlets, online at AltitudeTickets.com, or by phone at 866.461.6556.
