Pulaski Mariners News Release

Pulaski, VA (July 8, 2011) ¬- Five innings was all mother nature allowed tonight when the Pulaski Mariners took on the Johnson City Cardinals for the first game of their three game series. Control issues plagued the Mariners pitching staff throughout the night, resulting in an 8-0 win for the Cardinals.

Johnson City opened up the scoring in the second inning on an RBI single by third baseman Neil Pritchard. They then added heavily to their lead in the third. With Luke Taylor entering the game in relief of David Coleman in the second inning, the game started to get away from the Mariners.

The rain began to fall in the third inning which may have made things difficult on all the pitchers throughout the rest of the game. After a leadoff double by the Cardinals' Tyler Rahmatulla and a groundout by Kolby Byrd, the Mariners issued four straight walks. With the bases loaded Neil Pritchard delivered his second two out hit of the night, clearing the bases on a three RBI double to extend Johnson City's lead to 6-0. The Cardinals added two more runs to their lead in the fifth inning before the rain came and closed the game in the Cardinals favor 8-0.

Ben Freeman earned the win for the Cards allowing five hits, no runs, and striking out six. David Colvin was tagged with the loss for the Mariners throwing two innings and allowing one unearned run. Game two of this three game series will take place tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. at Historic Calfee Park.
