Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
Jupiter, FL - The Palm Beach Cardinals couldn't get the bats going against the St. Lucie Mets for the second straight night, falling 3-1 to the FSL South foe on Friday night at Roger Dean Stadium. The loss drops the Cardinals into a tie for second place in the division standings with the Fort Myers Miracle. The teams are 1.5 games behind the Bradenton Marauders with two games remaining in the regular season.
The Cardinals (39-29, 75-62) mustered just four hits in the game and are averaging 5.2 hits per game over their last five contests.
Palm Beach got off to a promising start, lighting the scoreboard first in the second inning. Luke Voit and Mason Katz started the frame with back-to-back singles. Voit later made it a 1-0 Cardinals lead when Anthony Garcia hit an RBI groundout to third.
But the Mets (35-32, 75-61) tallied a run in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to go up 3-1. L.J. Mazzilli, Jairo Perez and Jared King started the fourth with consecutive singles off Palm Beach starter Jimmy Reed to tie the game at 1-1.
Perez clubbed a solo home run in the sixth inning for the go-ahead run and Gavin Cecchini smacked an RBI triple in the seventh inning to pad the visitors' lead to 3-1.
Reed (6-2) allowed all three runs in the game on eight hits over 6.1 innings. He didn't issue a walk, struck out three and took the loss despite the quality start.
Seth Lugo was also sharp on the mound for St. Lucie. The right-hander surrendered just one run on four hits over seven innings, walked two and struck out 10 batters. The 10 Ks are tied for the highest total against the Cardinals this season. A rehabbing Jeff Locke also fanned 10 Cardinals on April 9 at Bradenton.
Chris Perry, Kevin Herget and Ronnie Shaban tossed 2.2 scoreless innings of relief for Palm Beach but the offense never got going to support the great pitching performance.
The two clubs will wrap up the regular season with a two-game set in St. Lucie over the weekend. LH Corey Littrell (0-2, 4.39) will start for Palm Beach on Saturday night against RH Kevin McGowan (3-5, 5.30) for St. Lucie. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
