Cardenas, Cortez to Join Bells in 2016

February 1, 2016 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bellingham Bells News Release

The Bells have added two players from Chico State University; infielder Andru Cardenas and outfielder Sonny Cortez. Both athletes will look to make an immediate impact in the lineup and on the field.

Cortez played baseball at El Camino Community College in 2015, where he was second in the state among junior college players, hitting .458 with an on-base-percentage of .520. El Camino finished their 2015 season with a sweep of East Los Angeles, largely in part to the efforts of Cortez, batting .615 and driving in seven runs in the series.

"Sonny just has a knack for hitting the baseball," Vice President of Operations Nick Caples said. "To hit .458 at any level is impressive, and we look for him to play a large role in our organization. He is the type of player that does anything that is asked of him. Any successful team needs players that are willing to do that, and we are thrilled that he will be here this season."

Cardenas was born in North Hollywood, Calif., where he attended Saugus High School. He played at College of the Canyons in 2015 where he majored in Kinesiology. Cardenas played in 15 games for College of the Canyons where he posted a .400 batting average. His best game came against Mt. San Antonio where he went four for five with two doubles in a 6-1 victory. Cardenas was solid in the field, finishing the year with a 1.000 fielding percentage.

"Andru is a great athlete and is extremely motivated," said Caples. "He knows what he is capable of on the diamond and is always striving to improve. He has a great bat, exceptional speed, and has a solid glove. The fans are going to enjoy watching him compete out there this summer."
