Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release

PLYMOUTH, MI - Giovanni Carabelli scored his first career USHL goal, while Joey Daccord made 42 saves, as the Muskegon Lumberjacks knocked off the United States National Team Developmental U17 Program on Hockey Day in America, 5-2.

The Lumberjacks opened the scoring 3:39 into the first period. Jake Coleman intercepted a Team USA breakout pass, and fired a wrist shot past Dylan St. Cyr, for his third goal of the season. Muskegon goaltender Joey Daccord stood tall for the remainder of the first period, as he stopped all 15 shots he faced during the early twenty minutes of play, and the Lumberjacks took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

Five minutes into the second period, Giovanni Carabelli was hooked from behind on a breakaway, and awarded a penalty shot. It only took Carabelli three games, as he found the back of the net on the penalty shot, for his first career USHL goal.

Team USA would respond less than two minutes later. Logan Cockerill chipped home a rebound past Daccord, to cut the Lumberjacks lead in half. However, Muskegon would once again take a two-goal lead, when Nate Kallen rifled a shot into the back of the net. Matej Paulovic and Collin Adams recorded the assists on Kallen's third goal of the season.

Muskegon would add an insurance goal on the power play early in the third period. Rem Pitlick moved the puck to Adams, he fired a shot that bounced off of Paulovic, and into the back of the net, for the Dallas Stars Prospect's 12th of the season.

Team USA tried to rally late in the game, when Tommy Miller scored to cut the Muskegon lead to two goals, but Pitlick fired home the empty net goal for his 30th of the season, and a 5-2 Lumberjacks victory.

Adams, Pitlick, and Paulovic all recorded two points during the afternoon game, and Daccord registered 42 saves to help the Lumberjacks finish the weekend strong.

The Muskegon Lumberjacks (18-20-5) return to action this Friday, February 26th, at L.C. Walker Arena, when the Omaha Lancers (22-18-4) visit Muskegon for a weekend series. The Lumberjacks will host Dollar Beer and Dollar Dog Night on Friday, when puck drops at 7:15 p.m.
