Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
Shreveport, La. - On January 8, the Shreveport-Bossier Captains unveiled their new look and introduced their new mascot, a smiling, swashbuckling slugger. On Saturday, nearly one month later, he will finally get himself a name.
The Captains partnered with the Shreveport Times in creating a contest where fans submitted potential monikers for the new Captain. More than 150 different name ideas were submitted, but only one has prevailed. Fans can get to hear the new name announced as the Captain takes the ice before Saturday night's Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs hockey game against the Texas Brahmas at the CenturyTel Center (puck drops at 7:05).
"First off, I want to thank the fans for all the great ideas that they sent in to us," Captains VP/general manager Craig Brasfield said. "To have as many responses as we did showed all of us here that our new name and look will have great support in the community."
The winning name (or a close variation of it) was submitted by seven different people. One of those fans will have their name announced as the grand prize winner Saturday night and get four season tickets, four authentic game caps, and will participate in the Captains Opening Night ceremonies on May 19. The other six winning submissions will receive consolation prizes.
"I also must acknowledge our partner in this contest in the Times and the Mudbugs," Brasfield said. "Mark Millsap and the Times staff did a great job in putting the contest on its Web site and in the paper, and we are very grateful to Ray Delia, Sherry Lafitte, and the whole Mudbugs staff for allowing us to be a part of their evening.
The Shreveport-Bossier Captains open the 2009 season in Pensacola on May 14, and will be on the road for the first series of their 2009 campaign. The Shreveport-Bossier Captains' first game at Fair Grounds Field will be May 19, against Grand Prairie. For information on tickets, promotions, advertising, and other opportunities with the Captains, check out the team's brand new Web site at www.sbcaptains.com, or call the Fair Grounds Field office at (318) 636-5555.
