Eastlake, OH - The Lake County Captains edged the Kernels 2-1 at Classic Park on Monday evening. Lake County's leadoff hitter Carlos Moncrief started the scoring early for the Captains when he smacked a 3-2 pitch from Kernels starter Heath Nichols over the wall in right field, giving Lake County a 1-0 lead.

The Captains extended their lead to 2-0 with an unearned run in the 4th inning. Jesus Aguilar doubled to lead off the inning and went to 3rd base on an infield groundout by Giovanny Urshela. Ronny Rodriguez reached 1st base on an infield singled to put runners at the corners. Nichols attempted to pick off Rodriguez. First baseman Brandon Decker was charged with a fielding error, allowing Aguilar to score and give Lake County a two run advantage.

The Kernels got on the board in the 5th inning, cutting Lake County's lead to 2-1. Jean Almanzar singled with one out. Francis Larson then doubled down the left field line. Lake County left fielder Brian Heere committed an error in left that allowed Almanzar to score.

The Kernels threatened in the last half of the game but were unable to plate another run. They got the leadoff man on in the 6th, 7th, and 8th innings, but the ballgame ended with the score 2-1. Nichols (6-7) pitched very well, but picked up the tough-luck loss. He went seven innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits. He struck out seven and walked one.
