
Caps sign premiership keeper

Vancouver Whitecaps Director of Soccer Operations, Bob Lenarduzzi, announced today that the Whitecaps have signed goalkeeper Tony Caig through the 2007 season pending international clearance. In keeping with club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Caig, who turned 32 on April 11, will enter his first season with the Caps and the United Soccer Leagues First Division after playing the last three seasons with the Newcastle United Magpies of England's FA Premier League (EPL). The 6'0", 186-pound keeper from Whitehaven, England joined the Magpies on January 31, 2003 from the Scottish Premier League side Hibernian. As a member of the Magpies the last three seasons, Caig has also made three on-loan starts for Barnsley of England's League One.
Caig made his professional debut with Carlisle during the 1992-93 season and spent the next seven years with the club starting 223 league games, seven FA Cup games and 12 league cup games. During the 1998-99 season Caig was transferred to Blackpool, who at the time were in the Second Division, before the mid-season transfer deadline and made 10 appearances to finish the year. Caig then had a brief stint with Charlton in 2000-01 before joining Hibernian in July 2001. During his time with Hibernian Caig played in 13 league games, 12 as a starter, and made two league cup starts.
Newcastle United has won the FA Cup six times and has four First Division titles to their credit. Currently Newcastle is tied for tenth position in the EPL and will play their final regular season game against Chelsea on Sunday, May 7. Caig is scheduled to arrive in Vancouver on Monday, May 8.
