Cape Fear Fire Antz Hot On & Off the Ice

Since January 1st, things have taken an upwards turn in Fayetteville, North Carolina where the Cape Fear Fire Antz are based. On the ice, Scott Rex's Antz have gone 6-1 in January and are right back in the playoff hunt in the South East Hockey League. The Antz have 24 points in the standings; only two behind the third place Knoxville Ice Bears and only six behind the second place Winston-Salem T-Birds. Off the ice, Cape Fear's "Operation Sellout" on Saturday, January 17th was a huge success as an SEHL record crowd of 7948 packed the Crown Coliseum to salute the Cape Fear area military and watch the Fire Antz defeat the first place Huntsville Channel Cats 5-2. The crowd of 7948 topped the previous SEHL mark of 6699, set by Cape Fear on October 25th. The Knoxville Ice Bears also drew close to 6000 to the Knoxville Civic Center with two home games last week, including, Friday's successful "Hockey Legends Night".

This week's SEHL schedule features both Huntsville and Knoxville on the road. Huntsville starts the week Thursday night back in Cape Fear and then travels to Winston-Salem for games on Friday & Saturday. Knoxville's lone game this week is in Cape Fear on Sunday afternoon.

SEHL Player of the Week

Ryan Kiley of the Cape Fear Fire Antz is the South East Hockey League Player of the Week. Kiley tallied three goals, including the game winning goal on January 16th against Huntsville, and added three assists for six points in three games. Kiley, from Reading, Massachusetts, has 7 goals and 6 assists for 13 points in seven games since joining the Fire Antz.. Ryan played college hockey at Merrimack College.

SEHL Goaltender of the Week

Blaine Russell of the Knoxville Ice Bears is the South East Hockey League Goaltender of the Week. Russell won two games for the I-Bears, stopping 65 of 68 shots in victories over Winston-Salem. On the year, the Wetaskiwin, Alberta native and former Anaheim Mighty Ducks draft choice in 1996, has posted a 3.35 goals against average and a 90.5% save percentage.

Other SEHL Top Performers

Huntsville's James Patterson tallied 2 goals and 4 assists for six points last week. Patterson leads the SEHL in assists with 46 and in total points with 67.

Allan Carr of the Channel Cats scored two goals and added an assist. Carr leads the SEHL in goals with 28.

Knoxville's Tom McMonagle scored four goals and added three assists for seven points.

Cape Fear's Matt Kohansky tallied two goals & four assists in three games.

Winston-Salem's Peter Cermak earned six points in three games (1 goal & 5 assists).

Winston-Salem's Mike LaZazzera

The Winston-Salem T-Birds Head Coach has been assessed a five game suspension from the SEHL for his actions in last Saturday night's game in Knoxville. The first game of the suspension was served during the T-Birds home game on Sunday (18th) against Knoxville. The remaining four games will be served during Winston-Salem's remaining four trips into Knoxville on January 29th, February 21st, March 14th, and March 18th.
