Cannons Win 2020 MLL Championship
July 26, 2020 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release
Annapolis, MD -ÃÂ In the 20th anniversary of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the Boston Cannons are bringing the Steinfeld Trophy back to Boston for the first time since 2011. The Cannons defeated the Denver Outlaws 13-10 Sunday afternoon on a blazing hot day at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
The Cannons were on top from the start with John Uppgren opening up the scoring three minutes into the first quarter.
Boston then took an 8-6 lead right before halftime when Justin Pugal scored a 2-pt goal on an assist from 2020 MLL MVP Bryce Wasserman with one second left on the clock.
After Pugal's goal, the Cannons took control of the rest of the game and had too high of a lead for Denver to come back.
Chris Aslanian scored three of the Outlaw's four goals in the third quarter to cut the deficit to three with 1:48 left in the third, but it would remain the last goal of the game for both teams.
Uppgren recorded a season-high today with five goals and one assist to help propel Boston to the win.
Boston goaltender Nick Marrocco finished with 10 goals and a .526 save percentage and was a huge proponent in stopping Denver's powerful offense aided by player-coach John Grant Jr.
While MLL legend Grant Jr. did not get the win in his last career game, he scored his first goal of the season, notched one assist, and will be remembered as one of the best to ever pick up a lacrosse stick.
In this unprecedented season, every team came in with a full 25-man roster, but Boston only had 20 players dressed this afternoon.
"We kind of laughed about it last night,'' Wasserman said. "Even with losing all those guys, we still had a full MLL Roster...We usually only bring 20 to a game, so we were at no disadvantage from any normal game."
