Cannons Season Ends with 13-9 Semi-Finals Loss

BOSTON, MA - Saturday August 21, 2010 - The Boston Cannons' 2010 season came to an abrupt end on Saturday afternoon as they were defeated by the Chesapeake Bayhawks 13-9 in the MLL semi-finals at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium in Annapolis, MD. The #1 seeded Cannons struggled in the Annapolis heat in the first half and fell behind 10-3 before mounting a second half comeback attempt. The comeback was led by Ryan Boyle and Kevin Buchanan and saw the Cannons get within 3, but Chesapeake held on to advance to Sunday's Championship Game. Bayhawks' goalie Chris Garrity was named the game's Bud Light MVP with his 18 save performance that kept the Cannons powerful offense to only 9 goals.
The first quarter saw both teams take a slow approach to the game with hot and humid conditions in Annapolis. The Cannons struck first when Max Quinzani scored 71 seconds into the match. The two week break had both sides a little rusty in the early going and it was another 5 minutes before the second goal of the game came as Chesapeake tied things up. After a Kevin Buchanan goal, Ben Hunt blasted a 2 point goal to give the Bayhawks their first lead with six and a half minutes to play in the first. The Bayhawks extended their lead to 4-2 as the first quarter came to an end.
The Bayhawks continued their hot shooting as Hunt tallied his second and third goals just three minutes into the second quarter and Jed Prossner scored the fifth unanswered as the Bayhawks opened a 7-2 lead. Matt Poskay broke a 17 minute plus scoring drought for the Cannons but the Bayhawks responded by finishing the dominating first half with 3 more goals to take a commanding 10-3 lead into the half.
The Bayhawks and Cannons traded goals to start the third quarter and after Jordan Burke replaced Kip Turner in goal the Bayhawks regained the 8 goal lead. The Cannons finally showed some life when Buchanan scored his third goal of the game and Pat Heim and Ryan Boyle each followed to cut the lead to 12-7 with 3:30 to play in the third. Both teams got good looks to end the third quarter but Burke and Garrity kept the score at 12-7 going into the final quarter of play.
The Cannons took advantage of 2 Bayhawks' penalties early in the quarter as Poskay scored the fourth straight Boston goal. Burke and the defense gave the Cannons offense several chances to close the gap but they could not find the back of the Bayhawks net and the score remained 12 to 8 with half a quarter to play. Boyle ended 7 minutes of scoreless play with another Cannons power play goal and Boston was within 3 with 7 minutes to play. Boston struggled to gain possession and Chesapeake slowed the game down taking valuable seconds off of the clock. Burke was forced out of goal to chase the Bayhawks and the Brian Vetter capitalized putting the game out of reach with an empty net goal. Chesapeake ran out the final 2 minutes of play to win 13 to 9 and finish the upset.
Chesapeake advances to tomorrows 2010 MLL Championship Game and will play the winner of the second semi-finals between Denver and Long Island. The title will be decided at 1:00 PM at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium and will be shown live on ESPN2.
