Boston, MA -- The Boston Cannons (9-2) defeated the Long Island Lizards (4-7) by a score of 10-9 in overtime in front of 6,876 fans at Nickerson Field on the Campus of Boston University on Thursday evening. Jay Jalbert scored a goal with 19 seconds remaining to tie the game at nine goals apiece and force overtime. However, Bud Light MVP Chris Rotelli scored his third goal of the game at 3:02 of overtime to give the Cannons the win. The Lizards and Cannons will meet again next Friday, August 12th, in the regular season finale at Mitchel Athletic Complex at 7:30 PM. The Lizards will likely need a win in their final game to advance to the MLL Championship Weekend.
Long Island held the Cannons to only one goal in the first half, as Stephen Berger led the Lizards to a 4-1 halftime lead. However, the Cannons dominated the third quarter, shutting out the Lizards 5-0 to take a 6-4 lead. Down 9-6 late in the fourth quarter, the Lizards scored three straight goals to force overtime.
Long Island stayed in the game with excellent defense and goaltending. Greg Cattrano recorded 22 saves, while Nicky Polanco held Mark Millon scoreless for the first time in his last 34 starts.
The Lizards were led offensively by Stephen Berger, who got his first career start on attack and scored four goals. Jay Jalbert (2 goals, 1 assist), Tim Goettelmann (2 goals), and Blake Miller (1 goal, 1 assist) also contributed on the Lizards offense.
Boston was led by Chris Rotelli (3 goals) and Mike Battista (2 two-point goals). Chris Garrity recorded 20 saves in the win.
The Lizards (4-7) will meet the Boston Cannons in the season finale next Friday, August 12th. Long Island will need to catch either the Philadelphia Barrage (4-7), or the Rochester Rattlers (4-6) to advance to the postseason.
