Cannons Claim First Place in League with 13-8 Win Over Hamilton

HAMILTON - The Boston Cannons (8-3) traveled to Hamilton, Ontario this evening, securing first place in the league heading into Championship Weekend. Bud Light Player of the Game, Jordan Burke, had 24 saves out of 32 shots on goal in the 13-8 victory over the Hamilton Nationals (5-6).

Paul Rabil, Kevin Buchanan, Matt Poskay and Max Quinzani all scored in the first quarter for the Boston Cannons. With two goals from Buchanan, the Cannons took a quick 4-0 lead over the Nationals. Hamilton was able to answer back with three goals of their own until Quinzani scored his second in order to give Boston a 5-3 lead in the first quarter.

Boston continued their offensive attack in the second quarter as Poskay and Quinzani scored once again, extending the Cannons' lead to five. However, Hamilton's Seven Keogh scored two back to back, bringing Hamilton within two points going into the second half.

The third quarter was quiet with only one goal scored on each side of the field. Boston was able to maintain a two point advantage, leading the Nationals 8-6 going into the final fifteen minutes of play. Hamilton got off to a great start in the last quarter, scoring two to tie up the game at 8, but was unable to continue their comeback in order to grab the lead. The Cannons regained composure into the final minutes of the game, ending with five unanswered goals. Brad Ross and Buchanan scored two each while Matt Smalley sneaked in his third goal of the season as well. Buchanan lead all scorers with 5 points, 4 goals and one assist in the game.

The Cannons return home next Saturday, August 13 to end the 2011 regular season against the Rochester Rattlers at 7:00 PM EST. Championship Weekend takes place August 27 & 28 at Navy Marine Corps Stadium in Annapolis.
