Cannons Announce Protected Player List for 2012 Season

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced today their 23-man protected list for the 2012 MLL season, according to Cannons General Manager Kevin Barney. This list is the first of two protected lists for the Cannons, with the next being the Expansion Draft Protected List which will be announced on October 12.
Each off-season, all MLL teams are allowed to protect 23 players for the following year. Players not protected automatically enter the league player pool and can be selected by any club in the Supplemental Draft.
"Decisions like this are never easy, especially with the talent and depth we had on this year's team," said Barney. "This is the beginning of the process of putting together the best possible team to defend our MLL Championship."
The 23-man list is highlighted by the 2009 and 2011 MLL Bud Light MVP Paul Rabil, the 2010 MLL Bud Light MVP Matt Poskay, and the 2011 Championship Weekend MVP Jordan Burke. Boston area natives Max Quinzani (Duxbury), JJ Morrissey (Winchester), Mike Stone (Wellesley) and John Ortolani (Billerica) were all named to the list. The complete list is below.
Two new teams are beginning MLL play in 2012, the Charlotte Hounds and the Ohio Machine. To accommodate these teams, the league will hold an expansion draft on December 7. Each team must submit an Expansion Draft Protected List by October 12. If a team protects two goalies they can protect a total of 10 players; if they protect one goalie they can protect a total of 12 players.
"It is going to be a busy off-season for our coaching staff with the expansion draft and supplemental draft in December, and the Collegiate Draft in January. Several meetings and calls have already taken place and our staff is preparing to build another championship team for 2012," said Barney.
