The Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse are proud to announce Boston University's Nickerson Field as its new home. The Cannons will begin play at Nickerson Field this season, opening their 2004 seven-game schedule on Saturday May 22 at 7 p.m. against the defending MLL champion Long Island Lizards. Nickerson Field, which features a 9,575-seat stadium and a FieldTurf playing area, is located on Harry Agganis Way just north of Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA.

"We feel Nickerson Field will take the Cannons fan experience to the next level," said David Gross, Cannons vice president. "Nickerson Field will provide Cannons fans with an ideal game-viewing setting and state-of-the art amenities. Premium seats at Nickerson have seatbacks, giving fans an optimal comfort level."

"Playing our home games at Nickerson Field gives Cannons fans the opportunity to watch the best lacrosse players in the world compete in a top-notch venue, in the heart of the City of Boston," Gross added.

"Boston University is pleased to host the Boston Cannons Professional Lacrosse Team," said Joseph P. Mercurio, executive vice president of the University, "making yet another major league sports team accessible to the residents of Greater Boston. Lacrosse is an exciting and entertaining sport that is rapidly gaining popularity nationally and within our local schools. We look forward to a great partnership."

With the Cannons' change of facility, the City of Boston becomes the hub of the nation's best lacrosse. In addition to the Cannons playing in Boston, the corporate headquarters for both Major League Lacrosse and the Boston Cannons will relocate to Brighton Landing in Boston, MA by March 1, 2004.

"We welcome the Cannons to Boston, the best sports city in the country," said Thomas Menino, Mayor of Boston. "We will work with the Cannons to bring the MLL Championship to our great city."

Moving to Boston is a major step towards achieving the goal of making the Cannons a permanent fixture in the major league professional sports landscape.

"While we are excited about our new home," said Gross. "We would like to thank the City of Lowell and the staff at Cawley Stadium, and recognize the impact they have had on the Cannons. Our organization is forever grateful to the people of Lowell for welcoming us into their community and providing the Cannons with constant support and assistance."

ABOUT NICKERSON FIELD:

Nickerson Field, the main outdoor athletic venue at Boston University, is a stadium rich in the tradition of Boston sports history. Once the home of the Boston Braves National League baseball club, it was purchased by the University in 1953 and hosts a wide variety of activities, including Terrier men's and women's soccer and lacrosse. With nearly 90 years of service to the Boston sports community, the stadium was the site of the first game in the history of the American Football League when the Patriots hosted the Denver Broncos in September 1960. In addition to the field, there is a 400-meter exercise track, a mercury-vapor lighting system, tennis courts and landscaping. The field was converted from AstroTurf to FieldTurf in May of 2001.
