Boston Cannons News Release
(Boston, MA - July 14, 2004) The Boston Cannons (6-1) of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) acquired New Jersey All-Star Goaltender Trevor Tierney in a trade today. In exchange Boston gave New Jersey its first round pick in the 2005 MLL Collegiate Draft, the fourth round pick in the MLL Collegiate Draft which Boston received from Rochester in a trade for Brent Rothfuss earlier this season and the first round pick in the 2005 Supplemental Draft which Boston received from New Jersey in a trade earlier this season. Tierney will join the Cannons in Rochester this weekend for Boston's game against the Rattlers.
"We made this trade to shore up the goaltending position," said Scott Hiller, Cannons Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel. "We feel we have a legitimate shot of winning the championship. I felt I owed it to our team to do everything possible to make the team better down the stretch."
The Cannons currently own the MLL's best record and hold the top spot in the American Division. The Cannons lost Chris Garrity, Boston's starting goaltender for the season's first six games, to an injury in the first quarter of their June 26 game against New Jersey. Kevin O'Brien filled the position for the rest of that game and started the following game against Philadelphia, making 23 saves, including several key stops down the stretch.
"Kevin O'Brien is our starting goalie," said Hiller. "He knows that and he earned that. He has been phenomenal in the two games he's played since taking over for Chris (Garrity). He'll start against Rochester on Saturday (July 17)."
"The addition of Trevor (Tierney) creates a competitive situation at the goalie position that will eventually help the Cannons," Hiller continued. "We look forward to Chris (Garrity) returning and joining the competition. All of our goalies are professionals and will handle this professionally. The competition will drive them to be better."
The deal for Tierney was completed at 4:56PM Wednesday, July 14. The MLL trade deadline is 12:01AM Thursday, July 15.
Tierney arrives in Boston following three and a half seasons in New Jersey, where he had been the starter since the beginning of the 2003 season. Through seven games this year, he had a 19.2 goals against average and 49.6 save percentage for the 1-6 Pride. He also leads MLL goalies in ground balls with 18. Tierney was an All-Star in 2003.
"Trevor is an experienced goalie," said Hiller. "He is a proven winner. He won at Princeton in college. He has been a starter for a number of years in this league. Any time you can add a goalie of his experience and caliber you do it."
The 2003 season, his first as a starter, was Tierney's best in the MLL. He tied for second in the league in wins with a 7-5 record and was second with a 14.3 goals against average. Tierney also finished second in the league with 196 saves and faced a league-high 362 shots, finishing with a 54.1 save percentage. With Tierney backstopping the team, New Jersey finished second in the National Division and earned a post-season birth.
Tierney was initially selected by the Pride in the first round (third overall) of the 2001 Collegiate Draft following a standout career at Princeton. He led the Tigers to their sixth NCAA title in 2001, earning First Team All-America and NCAA Goalie of the Year honors. He was also a member of Princeton's 1998 National Championship squad. His father, Bill, is the legendary head coach at Princeton and a member of the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
