West Oahu CaneFires News Release
West Oahu took advantage of 14 Honolulu walks as the CaneFires torched the Sharks, 13-5, this afternoon at Hans L'Orange Park.
Caleb Gindl, Chris Hatcher and Mark Hallberg each notched three RBIs in support of the CaneFires as the orange-clad squad improved to 14-14 on the season.
West Oahu posted a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Greg Burns and Hallberg led off with walks, and came around to score on a Gindl RBI double and Tyler Henson sacrifice fly, respectively.
Honolulu (14-14) countered with two runs in the second inning as Ka'aihue plated Tony Cruz on a sacrifice fly, and Michael Mitchell singled in Jordan Abruzzo from second.
But, the CaneFires increased their lead to 4-2 in the home half of the third when Cyle Hankerd singled home Gindl and Adam Loewen. West Oahu gained some breathing room on Hatcher's three-run double with two out, and Burns' RBI single pushed the advantage to 8-2.
The scoring spree spelled the end of the day for Honolulu starter Connor Graham (1-1) who allowed all seven runs on just two hits through 2 2/3 innings. Walks played a major factor in his demise, as all six of the batters issued free passes came around to score.
Ka'aihue brought the Sharks to within four runs of the lead on a two-run home run to left field with two out in the fifth inning. The blast was the fourth of the season for the Atlanta Braves prospect, but it proved futile as the CaneFires put the game out of reach with five more runs.
West Oahu starter Cody Scarpetta (1-2) earned the victory after tossing four effective innings through which he surrendered two runs on three hits to go along with five strikeouts.
The squads return to Hans L'Orange Park tomorrow at 3 p.m. for the finale of a two-game set.
