Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

SIOUX FALLS, SD (April 2, 2008) - The Sioux Falls Canaries added two more players to their roster, signing Outfielder Beau Torbert and Catcher Paul Smyth (pronounced Smyth). Torbert and Smyth will join the rest of the Canaries when the team reports to pre-season camp in Sioux Falls on April 26.

"The additions of Torbert and Smyth put us a couple steps closer to where we need to be when training camp opens," said Canaries Manager Steve Shirley. "With the Major League Baseball season under way, the anticipation for another season in Sioux Falls is only getting stronger by the day."

2008 will be Torbert's fifth year of professional baseball. Over the last four seasons, Torbert rocketed up through the Astros organization reaching Triple-A last year. Torbert was a Carolina League (Single-A) All-Star in 2006 and a Texas League (Double-A) All-Star last year. Torbert is a career .286 hitter, who has totaled 14 homers and 137 RBI in his career.

Last summer, Smyth hit .317 in 43 games for the Single-A Greenville Drive in the South Atlantic League. Smyth slugged .545 with 10 doubles, a triple, and seven home runs to provide 26 RBI for the Drive.

In other Canaries news, two-time Canaries All-Star Abner Arroyo was claimed off waivers by the Ottawa Rapids of the Can-Am League. In three years with the Canaries, Arroyo became one of the clubs top offensive producers with 71 doubles, 30 home runs, and 168 RBI.

"Abner is currently training with the Puerto Rican Olympic Team in hopes of going to Bejing for the Olympics," said Shirley. "Because he was unsure of his availability to us this summer, Abner wanted us to release him so that we would have the freedom to fill his roster spot. We wish him the best in his Olympic pursuit."

The Sioux Falls Canaries will open the 2008 American Association season on May 8 with a visit to the defending champion Fort Worth Cats. The Canaries home opener is on Tuesday, May 13, when the club will host the Pensacola Pelicans in their "Season Premier" featuring a post-game fireworks display presented by First PREMIER Bank and PREMIER Bankcard.
