Hamilton, ON - (March 3, 2009) - The Canadian Football League has renewed its commitment to bringing the game back to the city of Ottawa, Commissioner Mark Cohon announced today.
"Our Board of Governors is united in our desire to not only bring a CFL team to the great city of Ottawa, but to someday deliver the Grey Cup, and the tens of millions of dollars of economic activity that comes with it, to the nation's capital," Cohon said.
"We have the prospective owners in place to make that happen successfully, gentlemen with local roots, deep resources and a passion for Canadian football and building their community. And we have a league led by governors who understand the importance of returning to a city that's a major market and the symbolic centre of our country."
An Ottawa ownership group consisting of Bill Shenkman, Roger Greenberg, John Ruddy and Jeff Hunt had earlier been granted a conditional CFL franchise, with a condition being that they reach a suitable stadium agreement with the city of Ottawa by the deadline of March 18.
Meeting here as part of the league's winter meetings known as CFL Congress, the Board of Governors voted today to extend that deadline for six months.
"The Board understands just how hard the ownership group in Ottawa is working to move this initiative forward," continued Cohon.
"It's a reflection of their commitment to our league and their city, a commitment that has been unwavering since their first appearance before our Board. They have our full support."
