Can-Am to go With Six Clubs in 2009
March 30, 2009 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
DURHAM, N.C. - The Can-Am League today announced that the league would operate with six clubs for the 2009 season. Atlantic City and Ottawa will not operate. The league will consist of Brockton, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Quebec, Sussex and Worcester for the 2009 season.
When a proposed sale of the Atlantic City club fell through last week, and it became too late to find new ownership for the 2009 season, the director of the Atlantic City Surf turned in its membership to the league. Because the Ottawa club did not have ownership and was being funded by league members, league directors made the reluctant decision that it was not in the financial interest of the league to fund two clubs.
"We are tremendously disappointed that the Can-Am League will not be in Ottawa and Atlantic City in 2009," said league commissioner Miles Wolff. "These are two cities that we believe can be strong members. However, without solid ownership and the financial commitment behind these teams, it is in the best interest of the league to go with six clubs."
"It's a sad day for baseball in Ottawa," said Barry Robinson, general manager of the Voyageurs. "I have been very touched by the community passion for baseball and their demonstrated spirit to help make baseball a success."
The Ottawa Voyageurs would like to thank all the partners and their fans for their support since January and would like to wish the best of luck to the six remaining teams for the upcoming season.
